American DVD Players Region ?
Question:

I am off to the states in December and looking on Walmarts website plan to buy the following portable DVD player its $197. I am assuming that this will be region 1 but was wondering if by default American DVD players are generally region free as it seems that the main reason for region encoding is to ensure that Americans will see the films first.Initial Portable DVD Player With 4-inch Screen
THere are a few others including the Panasonic DVDLD50EBS and would be willing to pay more than the $197 if it meant the player was region free or hackable. Any help would be gladly recieved.
Cheers

Answers:

No, all US players by default are R1 only! And most portable players are difficult to hack, and probably the US ones only play NTSC (I haven't cheked - I use a laptop as a protable player!).
I have 2 US DVD Players, the one I got from a local store is Region 1 (Panasonic RP62S Prog Scan) and I have a Malata 520 which is region free and has PAL --> NTSC conversion, but that was special order over the internet and was quite expensive!
Best bet is to stick to just buying discs!

Answers:

pretty sure the american players are going to be mostly region 1 only...
I remember techtronics making a big advertising point that nasa had bought portable players off them for using on the space shuttle and space station when they had mixed nationality crews.

Answers:

US players are Region 1 and mostly are made for NTSC only , also the portables have NTSC only SCREENS so if you want to watch European PAL DVDs then DONT BUY A US PLAYER !!!!

Many thanks guys I maynow buy a $197 and use it only to play my region 1's on as compared to the £500 for a UK one it still represents value.
Cheers again
