Question:
Someone is selling a Philips 957 DVD player that has component out. Now i have my Toshiba SD100E connected to my PTAE100 projector via s video.
The philips has component out so i can use this to connect to my projector, the only thing is on the review of the Philips it mentions the SD100E as having slighlty better picture quality.
Now would the philips dvd player connected with component to my projector be better then my Tosh SD100E connected via s video.
Thanks
IMO it would - I've compared a couple of sources outputting both Svid and Component and to me the Component connection is the better of the two. You really need to compare it yourself if you can as what one person may provide and offer by way of a comparison may not mirror that of another.
What im thinking is that any improvement in picture quality from the component connection would be lost as the review for the philips 957 states the SD100E is slightly better picture quality and I have the SD100E at present connected via s video.
So component is better but the Tosh has a better pic quality.
Could be the case Brad. I've compared svid on a budget machine to progressive via VGA and the difference is like night and day. Only last week I compared Svid on the Xbox and interlaced Component, also on the Xbox, and there was not not alot of difference to be honest, although I'm not the best at reviewing stuff.
I'd be tempted to try it for yourself - not easy I know to arrange. I've heard that although to the eye immediate differences are harder to identify, if you go from watching VGA for a few months back to Svid etc.. you do notice the difference.
its sold now anyway, im thinking of getting the Tosh 510, any good.
I hear it's pretty good but wait a month or two for PAL Progressive players.

I also have the PTAE100 mate and i use a cheap dvd player i bought from ASDA for £100, i could see no huge difference with that and my £500 marantz jobbie. either i have it set-up wrong or its just not as good a projector as people let us believe! im still more than happy with it though!
There's no definate dates for the release of cheapish PAL progressive players until it's officially ratified. I suppose it's just speculation but I'd guess the big companies will have new models capable of doing it once the legalities are sorted. My guess is that players will be around the £500-£600 mark and aimed at users of plasma or projectors - definately the higher end of the market.
Just my opinion of course ;)
I'm sure you've read the same stuff over on avforums? The only alternative is to spend ~£1,000 on the Arcam DV88 plus.....
