Question:
I'd always read that bipolar surround speakers were meant to sound far better than convential speakers for the surround channels but never really took much notice. recently however, I upgarded to a pair of Mission M78DS Bipolars and was amazed that the difference.
The whole system now sounds a LOT better. I didnt realise until now that before it just sounded like I had some speakers behind me. Now I'm actually sat in the action wrapped in surround effects. It amazing! The whole sound field just envelopes me in a way it never could with normal rear speakers. Its weird because you dont really even notice that you speakers behind you.........I just feel as though I am IN the action :)
Anyone whos thinking of buying some new surround speakers should definitely audition bipolars and these M78s are bad boys in particular. I havnt even biwired them yet either
Yeah, good bipolars are sweet indeed - though positioning is quite important, and very dependant on your room size, shape and soft furnishings!
I didn't bi-wire mine (Mission 78ds) - bought nice QED silv. anniv single-wire instead.
Know of any good prices for these babies?? Is the rest of your speaker system Missions, and if you have floorstanders for the main pair, do you really, really need a sub???
...you've got me all excited now ;) :D
You ALWAYS need a sub if you can afford one. Doc you have good taste dude ;) They are bad boys arent they? I'm gonna biwire 'em soon with QED Original MKII biwire (same cable as my mains are hooked up with.
My other speakers are all Tannoy Henry my man :smokin:
I only joined this forum today but I have to say I'm enjoying it already. Rock on!
I'm cooking with a full 78 series! :smokin:
782s up front, 78c and the dipoles..
No sub yet - I will get one at some point, but I'm pretty happy with the 782s at the moment.. their side-firing bass speakers are far better than the magazines would have you believe!
Oh, as for prices... you'll be hard pushed to get good deals on the 78 series, cos Mission are a bit anal about selling them cheap or too widely - for instance, dealers aren't allowed to sell them mail-order.. you can visit the shop, and then they'll courier them to you, but no flicking through the Yellow Pages!
However, Mission cut the prices recently.. so the centre speaker and the rears that were both 350, can now be got for 270 ish each. What you could try, though, is to find a friendly dealer who'll do you a crazy deal on cable when you buy the speakers. I got my silv. anniversary dead cheap, including the 3 lengths of bi-wire with Airloc connectors up front.
Doc, the 782s' are serious loudspeakers but they cannot match a good sub for outright extension ans slam. Adding a quality sub will extend your LFE and open up the Missions big time.
With your speakers I would say nothing less than a REL Q200E will do
