Question:
Hi,
Has anybody out there got the Brotherhood of the Wolf Canadian 3 disc set and played it on a playstation 2 with region X.
When I try to play it I get sound but the picture is completely black and on the menus you can see the menu selection that is highlighted but nothing else. No other region 1 or 2 DVD has done this and all others play fine before and after I try this disc.
The movie plays fine on my stand alone DVD player and on my laptop (although for the first hour of the film on the laptop the video does have a habit of freezing for a couple of seconds regularly). If it wasn't for this I would assume it was a dodgy disc but it seems a little odd that this is the only disc never to play (and I've played a few) through my PS2.
BTW the other 2 discs do the same as the first.
If anyone could shed any light on this I would be grateful.
Cheers.
Hmmm - had a problem where I wouldn't get past the regional warnings, but it seemed to right itself (probably a bit of dust). As for the video freezing, this happens several times during the movie, but it's one of Christopher Gans directorial effects; not sure if you are referring to this?
Saw it for the first time a couple of night ago, BTW; a brilliantly entertaining romp and that DTS is pretty darned good.

So many films, so little time...
Thanks for the reply
The freezing is not the directorial flourish unfortunately but it is actual freezing of the movie for a few seconds, this however I would put down to the laptop and DVD-ROM Drive as the film plays without error on my stand alone DVD Drive.
I have heard some say that the quality of the video on the 3 disc Canadian version is poor compared to other versions..Would anyone care to comment on this?
Looked fantastic to me. But I haven't seen the other versions.

I heard that too and was a little apprehensive; don't worry it looks - and sounds - fantastic.

I've just sat down & watched it this morning on my PS2 & had no playback problems whatsoever, so maybe you've been given a fussy disc, or a fussy PS2?
Can you confirm that it was the canadian edition and not the single disc US version. Thanks.
Yeah sorry, it was definitely the Canadian Edition.
Cheers, hopefully it's just a dodgy copy then.
Have you got the updated PS2 DVD drivers?
I have the updated drivers that came with the remote control. I haven't heard of anymore (and being one of the few who sent the registration card back, I would of hoped that Sony would inform me). Do you know if there are more. Cheers.
This is more appropriate in the DVD hardware forum than here - but then again it could also fit into the console forum too
Choices, choices - as it's not movie related and not really console related for games I'll put it in the hardforum forum :)
DJ - my copy is also unplayable on the PS2 with Region X.
I get a bit of music on a blank screen then the title of the film in French - and that's it. It's the same with all three discs. Hmph.
Most of my DVDs are R1 and this is the first problem I've had.
So that's two thumbs down for the Canadian 'Brotherhood' on the PS2 and one thumbs-up.
Any more takers?
I got it to work earlier, here's what to do -
-Play the disc in the PS2 as normal
-Press the stop button on the remote (you may have to wait until the menu selections come up to do this)
-Press the 'Display' button
-Then select the 'DVD menu' from the options
(it may work if you press the DVD Menu button straight from the remote rather than those last 2 steps but I didn't try).
The menu that came up for me was the french menu but I didn't mind as the film is the same and the options are easy to understand.
This is obviously not an ideal solution but it will let you play the movie and the extras for the moment until a proper solution can be found.
Hope this helps (I believe the steps are accurate but I'm writing this from memory), I'll test it again later and post back if I was mistaken.
Thanks for the tips - but I tried out the above and it still doesn't work. I'm not even getting the menu!
In desperation, I keyed in 01 when I got the blank screen with the title in French. I got another blank screen with menu options along the bottom and selected 'Film' but just got a bit of sound over yet another empty picture before the machine stalled.
Any suggestions?
