Is multi region straightforward?
Question:

I'm sure this is a stupid question but I'm probably the only user of this forum still pocessing a R2 only DVD player. If I purchase somthing like a Toshiba SD220e Silver (Multi-Region) say from Richer Sounds, would it just detect and play R1 & R2 discs without any need for adjustment? Will an R1 disc play with the TV set to PAL.
I'm sure if any adjustments are necessary it won't exactly be rocket science, but I'd like to know before I go ahead and take the plunge.

Answers:

Some R2 players can be made 'multi-region' by a not-so-secret combination of presses on the remote control. The Tosh you mention unfortunately doesn't. It requires a professional tweaking... although I notice a new thread in this forum for another option to make it multi-region... just look down a few lines on the list of threads!

if your TV can playback PAL60/NTSC then using a m/r region player is the the same as an r2 noly player. Just pop the disc in and play. No need to change anything, region selection should be automatic.

Answers:

Make sure that either 1) your TV can handle NTSC or 2) the DVD player can output NTSC as quasi PAL

Thanks for the replies. My TV is a Panasonic PK10 with NTSC, so I gues swapping regions would be seamless.

Thanks for that. I've read in other threads that people can play RCE on this machine so I don't think that's a problem, unless anyone else knows different.

You should be ok with the tosh 220. Most of the new multi region chipped players can handle RCE even with auto region. Try Leading Edge Concepts (http://www.leconcepts.com) their site will tell you if the Tosh sd220 they sell can handle RCE.
i have a Toshiba Sd900e and it plays any disc i throw at it regardless of region and RCE..
