IMHO I would look @ the Hitachi 830. I got one after some fairly extensive demoing and I really rate the picture quality once well setup (shop demo's are NEVER well setup).

Nope, remain to be convinced that it's a big jump on a CRT haveing seen the current offerings.
finally how far away are we from HDTV in the UK
Years I think, it's not a standard in Europe yet (not sure if it ever will be in the same form as the US, more then lightly a revised version for Europe).

I remember Baps posted some pics of HDTV in action - some stills of a football game. Man, they looked good. Picture it.. HDTV with direct digital hard disk recording and time-shifting. I can't imagine how home viewing could be any better than that!
Both the Panny and Tosh 36" widescreen TVs are supposed to be the dogs dangly bits according to most of the latest reviews I have read with the Panny edging slightly ahead of Tosh.
