Minidisc recording problem - bad disks?
Question:

I tried recording a disc a couple of weeks ago - a Sony 80-minute blank - and although the recording appeared to go fine (no error messages), the disc kept stalling on playback - like the laser was having trouble tracking. It got worse as the recording progressed. This happened on my car player and home recording deck.
I tried recording a TDK blank directly afterwards, and that was fine.
Just got back from holiday, tried another Sony blank from the same batch, and the same thing again!
Is it common to get bad blank disks occasionally? I've recorded 20+ Sony disks so far with no problems - I like the neat storage boxes the Sony blanks come in :)
Just hoping it's not a problem with my recorder (Sony MD-JB940)
Thanks!

I had the same problem but with cheap 'HI SPACE' minidiscs.
I'm surprised you're having problems with Sony ones though.
I use TDK now and have not had any problems since.
By the way, my machine is the 920

I had a similar problem with my Sharp recordable portable player and with any disc. I got it checked out under the guarantee and the engineer test came out with a optical laser assembly fault. This caused laser skipping, not reading the tracks, no recording, accepting disks and not of any make of disc etc. Have you use a mini disc cleaner? This replacement of the O.L.A is £90 + Labour without the guarantee that's if it is the fault. There could others but it is usually the mechanism that goes first and sometimes the Laser. I am no engineer but had many repairs to my machines with lasers. :)

Update - it's looking like they were bad disks. I picked up another box of Sony 80-minute disks from Sainsbury's on the way home, and recorded Mozart's Requiem on one of them with no probs at all :rocker:
Some spotty oik in HMV where I bought the last box from probably booted them round the storeroom a few times :oh-hum:
BTW, a sure sign of a format's success is when you can buy blank media for it at Sainsbury's ;)
