Question:
Hi folks, if someone could help it'd be much appreciated. I have a kiiro 838d player, Pioneer VSX d510 receiver and Packard Bell 5800 surround system. Ok, not exactly top-end I know, but it suits me down to the ground. I've connected up the speakers and sub to the receiver, and they all work ok with the test tone, so seem to be connected ok - the dvd is connected to the receiver using the 6 RCA outputs on the back, going in to the appropriate inputs on the Pioneer.
My problem is that during 5.1 channel playback, i get no noise from the sub, not a jot. The Pioneer's manual states that the sub you connect should be "Active", but I wouldn't know if my sub is, or what the difference between active and inactive is. The sub is definately working - on dolby digital playback, you get output through it, and the test tone also goes through it.
I've also tried using an optical connection between the kiiro and the pioneer, although this doesn't allow 5.1 channel sound. Is this correct? I'm 99% sure that all the components are working as they should be, so my feeling is that i've either set-up something incorrectly in the receiver's options, or not connected things correctly.
Please, if anyone has any ideas, or can offer any help, it would be most welcome. Thanks.

I'm having trouble following this. Dolby Digital IS 5.1. So what did you mean by '5.1' playback?
dolby digital doesn't have to be 5.1, it's just a digitally encoded signal iirc

The receiver has buttons/options for DD and 5.1. As mixalot says, DD is a digitallly encoded signal, not necessarily 5.1 channels. At least, that's how i understand it.
Anyone got any ideas? I'm going to continue to play with settings/connections etc, but it would be a great help to me if someone could point me in the right direction!
Please?
An active sub is one that has its own onboard amplification..as opposed to a "passive" sub which has'nt.
I'm afraid i dont know your particular kit,but maybe there is an option for either a coax or optical connection that needs changing.Yoy will need either of these to carry a digital signal.
It may be something wierd, like the amp settings for surround (perhaps particularly DD) are not properly enabled out of the box and you may need to activate sub output on an on-screen display through the telly? If you have a menu button on the remote and an s-video connector to a TV, you should be able to check the current surround settings for your receiver.
Hmmm. Well, i've got the sub connected to the received via a coax cable, and as far as I can tell, the sub is "on" on the receiver - lcd display says "sub - on". Haven't got an s-video connection on my tv (LG nettee), but I spose I could get an s-video to scart maybe.... Or perhaps connect the video out from the amp to my scart splitter box.... Can you tell that i'm trawling for ideas?!! Thanks for the pointers guys. I'll keep bumping this for more ideas. I guess i've got quite an unusual set-up.

forget the svid cable unless your amp has an on screen display. at a guess if you are getting a signal when in test mode, but not when playing 5.1 then its due to the signal the sub is recieving being low, especially if the manual says you need an active sub. active subs are mains powered & amplified, as opposed to passives which arent & are normally connected betwen the front L&R speakers.
Thanks TK. The sub IS mains powered, but I doubt whether it's amplified. So, would turning up the sub volume on the amp the way forward?
my amp and dvd player both have options to redirect the .1 channel to the fronts, the sub or both...maybe its this option you need to hunt for?
I thought to get 5.1 through the reciever you would need a digital cable, co-ax/optical from dvd to reciever.
Also in the 5.1 setup you should have the option to enable and disable your sub on the reciever.
Thanks for all the pointers guys. Fixed the problem - using optical connection between dvd & receiver, whacked up the sub volume and bass to MAX, turned up subs volume on receiver to +5db (that's on top of the global volume setting), and it's cool now. Maybe a little too loud though.... :D
Thanks again.
