Question:
EDIT Done a quick search, and it looks like most people are happy with the player...but most posts are a few months old. Is there anything out that can compair to the Sony NS-700 at the moment for the £190 (multi-region) price range?
Also would it be able to play RCE discs?
-------
-
Currently got a Cyberhome ADL528, and considering upgrading it. I realise that £100 - £300 covers a wide range of players. But I want to get something that is worth the money.
Idealy I am after something that player VCD / SVCDS, it must be able to read CD-R and CD-RW. Also DVD-R would be nice. If it is possible a player that also reads DVD-Audio and SACD would be great, though I wouldn't want that if it is a compramise on the picture / player.
I have had a little look at Richer Sounds, but in all honesty, I have no idea what is good and what is crap.
Oh, and it must be multi-region, and be able to play RCE discs.
Cheers...
You could try the Denon-800?
Superfi sell it for £200 due to the fact they buy in bulk from Denon, they have a sort of deal going with them. It normally retails for £300! Picture and sound are excellent and it's multi-region (from superfi).
Looks like quite a nice player, and also the y have it for £180 at the mo'. But it doesn't mention any support for VCD of SVCD which really is a must have for me...
I have the Sony DVPN-S 700 from Richer Sounds and it does play RCE discs.
Excellent! I just found Richer Sounds, and they said it wouldn't play RCE, and so tried to flog me an LG system...
Unfortunatly they are closed now. Maybe I will go and get one next week...
Have you ever had any other DVD Player? Just basically wondering how much improvement I could expect over my Cyberhome in both picture and sound...
Cheers...
No, this is my first proper DVD player, I was using game consoles before. But I am more than impressed with the Sony DVP-NS 700, the picture quality is excellent. As for Richer Sounds saying that it does not play RCE discs, all I can say is I've played 'Resident Evil' RCE which just works fine and have played region 1 discs 'Blade2' and 'A Beautiful Mind' with no problems. I just place them in the player and it plays the discs straight off.
Okay, thanks again. Looks like I might be getting one soon then... :)
Thats a load of cobblers, I have R1 "RCE" disks and they play fine on my 700, it also does play SACD and VCD disks.
I went through 3 other players before returning to the Sony brand I had before, as I had been spolit by Sony's picture quality, anything else looks horrid, so I had to get another Sony.
Cheers. Also, does the player play SVCD discs?

As Captain_Chaos says. It does SACD.
I bought one about a month or so ago, and like others here I like it. For me it was a big step up from my existing Wharfdale, better sound and picture quality.
However, one slight fly in the ointment is the pause that happens when a layer change happens. Its certainly very noticeable, but doesn't worry me too much, although I would prefer it wasn't there !
Apart from that excellant player. Suprised no one else has mentioned this issue.
As you say there is a noticeable layer change but I can live with that given the picture and sound quality.
I've got the NS-700, and i can confirm its a bloody good player. It is starting to look a bit outdated now thou. And it doesnt play MP3's which is a bit of a bummer for me.
But i have seen it currently @ £170 inc VAT (Mutli Region) at webelectricals.co.uk.
I'm not sure if this link will work for u, but here goes...
Sony DVP-NS700 Multi (http://www.webelectricals.co.uk/cgi-bin/webelectricals.storefront/EN/product/1174&2D1)
Check if they have stock first
R2 is £150 at Richers with this month's WHF - will be a little more for m/r but doesn't say how much..
I think it is £190 for the multi-region in Richer at the moment...
Still a little unsure now though, as the TV I brought is a bit crap, and I may send it back to get a Toshiba, but that will cost me another £150, meaning I have nothing left of the DVD Player... :(
jnms - how much was the Sammy TV..?
Have you looked at Krish AV (http://www.krishav.co.uk/Products.html) for cheapish TVs?
Bapapapa - It was £620. The Toshiba I looked at was a pure flat screen 32" model (though I don't know the model number), this was £750. That is more than I really wanted to spend, but will stretch to it if needed.
I got the TV from a local dealer, who are actually very good on customer service and have fairly competive prices. Just going to take a look at that site you linked to now...
Is there anything you would recommened within the price range I mentioned?
i have the sony dvpns700,i got it from www.electrocentre.com it cost 198.99 for multi region and postage and play`s my rce dvd`s

I bought the Multi Region version from Richer for £199 two weeks ago.The picture quality is superb on my new JVC TV but I cannot get the blue light on my Sony 1070 amp to come on even with DVDs that did so on my previous DVD player.Anyone have any ideas?
I bought the multi region Sony NS-700 in black last week from webelectricals for £169.95 delivered. I ordered it around 11:00 and it arrived at my office approx 24 hours later. Superb service in my book
It's my first player  so I can't compare it to anything else, sorry.
It definately plays VCDs, but not sure about SVCDs.
It definately plays SVCD's. Worked no problem on my player.

Sounds to me as though you are getting PCM only. The blue light lights up on receipt of a multichannel signal. Go int the DVD players audio menu's and make sure the digital output is set fro Dilby Digital & DTS. I haven't got a 700 - yet - mine arrives tomorrow - £100 second hand from avforums - MR and RCE capable.:rocker:
