Question:
I used to have my rear speakers near the top of the ceiling as that was the easiest/neatest place to put them.
I've recently bought a new home cinema setup and was wondering is it worth putting them up there again?
Probably not. The ideal place is 2 to 3 foot above listening position. On to side walls if you can, left and right of the listener.

cheers, time to get the drill out again
:) Make sure to put them about 6 inches or so back from the sitting position as well...
Is it surrounds or rears ? They are not the same.
it's surrounds (I think)
jnms is perfectly correct. If you put them too far back you can hardly hear them.
If it's a 5.1 setup you are talking about your talking about surrounds.
Mine are very poorly positioned and it completely spoils the sound stage.
I am just toying with the idea of putting a new pair and turning mine into a 7.1 setup and avoiding taking the trunking and speakers down.
Even then I think that the rears should be pretty close together (which they aren't on the rear wall.)
