Hate to answer my own question, but this may be of use to someone:
Switch the player on, open the tray.
Enter the numbers 8, 4, 2, 1. You should now be in a 'secret' menu. Use the curser to choose either the region settings or macrovision options.
Pressing select while in region settings changes this; 9 is region free.
Obviously the only options in macrovision are 'on' and 'off'. When you've finished, close the tray.
