Question:
I've asked this before but no one knew at the time.
I have the KEF egg surround speakers and the YAMAHA DSP-AX620 amp. When i need detailed sound out of the left or right speakers it sounds very echoey as if in a cave! Examples are people who are meant to be in the same room but are just off camera - when they talk it sounds as if they are miles away! The shot can pan across to that actor and they are right next to the camera!
Other examples are music tracks that may start in the centre speaker but then move to the side speakers to allow the dialogue to come in. When the music shifts it goes from sounding clear and full to sounding like it's being played in Wembley Stadium!
Does anyone else have this problem and if so any solutions??
You're not using any kind of dsp mode are you..?
Baps, i'm a novice mate. What does DSP mean?
digital sound processing
look at the front of the amp it should say what mode's it in
you want it say normal (or enhanced) or effect off if your using a cd/md player.
Aaah, i see. I do have options for different effects such as Hall, Opera etc. and they are most definitely turned off (i think the LCD panel reads Enhanced when i watch movies).
Has the amp got a 'direct' mode. If it has try playing something with it turned on.
Defo sounds like a DSP effect, the 620 remembers what DSP you set for each input.
Maybe even switch enhanced off and just use normal and see how that is.
Dave
I didn't realise i could set effects for each input. I'll check it out, thanks guys.
Has the amp got a 'system reset' IE: Can you boot it back up into the mode it was shipped in?
If you aren't concerned about spending even more time fiddling then reset the amp and start again
I've tried it with Enhanced off and it does eliminate the echo but as a result the whole sound is very weedy. Just tried Straight Story and the thunder storm sounds great in 'Enhanced' mode but Sissy Speceks voice coming off camera is echoey. When Enhanced is turned off, Sissys voice is solid and sounds correct but the storm sounds crappy. The thunder is a slight cracking sound!
Surely i don't have to have one without the other??
Does it sound strange when you play a cd in stereo mode?
The loss of frequency in the speakers could be due to inccorect phasing. IE: Have you got the speakers wired up correctly?
