Question:
I have been considering selling my 18 month old Philips 28pw6615 widescreen for a couple of months now.
However the TV has gone completley tits up and will barely turn on anymore. I took out the 5 year tube warranty but unfortunately didn't extend the normal warranty.
It is definately not the tube so basically the set if buggered. The set turns on breifly (about 10 sec) and then turns istself off and the green power indicator light flashes red
Am using an old 14" portable at the moment but that hasn't got any scarts - so no dvd, ntl etc and I can't stand it any longer.
I am after recommendations of TV's upto around £800. It must be Silver, 32" widescreen or above and have a flat screen. Not bothered about the sound as it will be connected to my amp.
I am also a bit reluctant to buy online again as this is where I bought the troublesome Philips - just bad luck I guess.
do you want 50 or 100Hz scanning?
in comet:
for about 800-850, you can get a sony 50hz
and for about 950 you can get a 100hz.
It would look something like this (http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/297_816273.html)
100Hz sony's also have 50/100hz switching(for footie lovers)
Hope that helps a bit.

Edit: or a nice looking 50z Philips (http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/297_630059.html) if you haven't already been put off enough by Philips.
Thanks for the reply EnglAsh - not sure on the 50/100Hz thing, have read some worriying things about 100Hz. Watch everything either DVD or NTL digital so I don't know if that makes a difference.
The trouble is you look at the Comet price and then you look on the web - that's the price you pay for being able to take it back to the shop I guess.
I suppose I could always buy from somewhere like unbeatable and take out their extended warranty.
while looking around, i've found that comet are pretty good with their online prices. they lower them based on the internet market, and they're usually less expensive than in the stores. (click instore price under the online price) if you get a sony or most philips 100hz tv's, you will have the option to switch between 50hz and 100 if they are really that bad. it is meant to improve picture regardless of analogue or digital source.(more lines, or so i have been told.) it would be a waste of money to get a 100hz if you weren't gunna use it, but at least with the option to convert, you won't be completely stuck. also, comet doesn't put a lot of there selection on the web. you'd be better off going to comet, currys, or dixons, and picking your tv there. then, if necessary, go buy it online. currys (and dixons i believe) do not change their online prices, so they will always seem more expensive when shopping online. if you bought from comet.co.uk, i'm sure you'd be able to order the extended warranty. i really can't say about unbeatables, as i haven't been on their site very much... only to compare prices to comet. also comet have free delivery on some products atm, so factor that into the cost. good luck on finding a new tele, and if you wanna do me a favour, reply to my post a little further down the first page.

furthermore, take a look at your house insurance. when shopping for my tv and discussing warranty this week, it was revealed that some home insurances cover things such as tv defects. you may have to pay for someone to come out, but new parts, etc, may be covered by your existing insurance. could be worth a check...
If I hadn't already claimed for a £1000 lounge carpet this month  I would have considered this - but I think my next premium may be a little high.:shocker: :shocker:
something tells me that you may be right..
but about those tvs?
whats wrong with 100hz, and what do u think of those models?
I always think that the Philips are much better looking than the Sony's but as you said I'm a bit put off by Philips now - although I've heard no other reliablilty comlaints about them.
Aparently Philips TV's suffer from geometry problems, with the image being skewed on the screen and there are major problems with the Sony's and scrolling bars on the screen - and all these seem to be magnified on the 100Hz sets.
Purely on looks I would go for the Philips out of those 2 but Panasonic make some lovely looking sets that have great picture quality, but these also are prone to screen problems.
Sony's look good as well, you just have to go up in price a bit more. If you wanted a nice looking sony, you could always get a 28 inch and that would fit into your budget, but i don't think that's what you want. if you wanna example of a nice looking sony, go here: My TV (http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/616306.html)
But although those Sony's may not be the most attractive, it is still a great system, and a great price for what you get IMO. That was going to be my original sony before i changed my mind and splashed out for the one above.
Anyway, I decided to look around for you again, and this isn't bad, if you can handle 28" :28" Panasonic. (http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/297_768527.html) Its about 150 cheaper online, and it is flat screen w/ 100Hz, and NTSC Compatible. Take a look, you might take a fancy.
All in all though, I think that I'd take out that extended warranty and grab the Philips, or Sony. The Philips is squarer for a nicer look, and their technology can't be that bad; almost all TV guides rate them near-top. Plus with the extended warranty, you should be safe from defects. Just my opinion, but give it a bit of thought.

Sorry to flood you with stuff, but I just came across this again. Its JVC, 32", 50Hz, pure flat. It is also very pretty, as I remember seeing it in the shop earlier this week. At 900 its not that far out of your price range. I don't know what ratings its got, but on the looks side, I'd give it an A+.
JVC 32" (http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/297_839611.html)
Hope you take a liking to this as much as I did,

If I were you I'd spend £50 getting an engineer out to look at your current Philips - if it's not the very expensive tube then you may be able to get it repaired.
At least then you could sell it and maybe hang around for a bargain to replace it with?
