Question:
Hi, really basic question. I have a pioneer dvd 515 (yeah quite old lol) and I notice that the volume is much lower when using dvd than it is on normal tv reception. it a real simple scart lead connection with a silver plated scart going from the dvd to AV on back of tv. I need to turn the volume up considerably to enjoy a dvd and then its almost deafening when i revert to tv again. Is this usual, should i be afraid, very afraid? what can i do about it besides buying a new player?
thanks

is it possible you have turned down the volume on the dvd player with out you nowing
i now some players that you can turn down the volume from the dvd player,(my sammy dvd player has a volume button, where i can increase &decrease the volume) on the player

ah ha so it is normal that i should have my tv volume at almost maximum to get a dvd reasonably loud?
no
Hmmm not sure bout that. Dont think there is a volume control on it. Im not saying the volume has to be up to hear it i just mean to get real drama, real noise it has to be amost completely at full volume on the dvd.
It's cos DVDs have a full dynamic range (I think), so there is more of a difference between talky bits and loud explosions.
On my PC DVD, DVD Genie gives the option to turn of the full range to give amplified volume.
Yeah, its all about dynamic range. In theory for any volume setting the maximum volume possible is constant. So by having dialogue volume quieter you need a higher volume for normal dialogue which leads to louder bangs due to more headroom. A lot of DVD players have a "midnight mode" which compresses the dynamic range, so despite the name for the same amp volume setting its louder, however once the volume is lowered for normal dialogue, the volume of the bangs will be lower.
thanks
