In answer to the question the 905 and 735 are stylistically similar (I think Sony may well be using the same front plate to a large extent). The 735 has a far better remote (and I have ordered one on the belief that it'll operate 99% of the functions).
Stupidly, the 905 has a jog dial on the front panel in the same manner as the 735 but the remote (unlike the 735) doesn't. I doubt many people would sit on the floor in front of the player to operate this.
Picture wise IIRC the 705 would have had a 10bit 27mhz processor while the 905 now has a 12 bit 108 mhz. As far as I am concerned the 905 is quite a lot better than the 735 in clarity and colour. I would say it is only just short of the Arcam DV88 I had.
Sound quality is outstanding and is superior to all the previous players I have owned. Also the output levels of the 905 seem higher than the 735 which always had me reaching for the volume.
CD replay is warm but perhaps not terribly insightful. SACD replay as expected is excellent.
Other useful feeatures include the resume funtion which remembers where you stopped on up to 40 discs. There is also a 10 second "action replay" button on the remote.
If you are on a budget and can only stretch to a couple of quid then a used 735 would be excellent. If you do want a new player then the 905 won't disappoint but be sure to demo the Tosh 510 and Pioneer DV656 as well.
