Question:
Looking to get the re-released
Queen - A Night at The Opera but need to know if my Pioneer will play it first.
:)
well I have a Doors DVD Audio CD and it plays fine on mine.
The 535 is not DVD-A compatible but it will certainly play the PCM track on the DVD (if it has one, should do..), but of course you might as well go out and buy the regular CD instead and save a fortune..
For DVD-Audio you'll need a player that decodes DVD-A which is connected via the 5.1 phono output on the player to the 5.1 phono input on the receiver. I think it's only the Denon systems which will decode the DVDA signal digitally..
So what will I be missing out on if it doesn't decode DVD-A?
This is what's on the disc

Anything?? Depends on the spec of the particular DVD-A, but probably a higher bit-rate & multi-channel sound are the main suspects...
As I said, if your player doesn't decode DVD-A then you may as well buy the regular CD..
DVD Audio FAQ (http://www.digitalaudioguide.com/faq/dvd-audio/faq_intro.htm)
But seeing as the disc provides DTS will I still be able to get this, just like DTS off a regular DVD.
Surely this alone makes it worthwhile?
Yeah should be able to play regular DTS. Probably..
Worthwhile..?
Dunno, buy it and tell us..

when I play my Doors CD I get a DD 5.1 mix. I thought thats what DVD Audio was?
Every DVD-Audio disc I have (and I have half a dozen) is compatible with standard DVD players - they offer Dolby Digital 5.1 as an alternative, and a couple offer DTS as well. So you'll still get better sound than you would off a CD, even if you can't play DVD-Audio specifically.
The difference in sound quality is pretty obvious, though - DVD-Audio is essentially uncompressed 5.1 sound (it uses a lossless compression system), so it's a bit like six-channel PCM. And if you want to hear the sound at that level, you'll need a player that can specifically decode DVD-Audio tracks.

No - it's 5.1 but it's not Dolby Digital. DVD-Audio is an alternative 5.1 system with a far greater dynamic range (theoretically up to 192kHz, though I've yet to come across anything going above 96) and (effectively) no compression.
It sounds astonishing if you can play it properly - even my non-audiophile friends have gone "wow!" at the opening to my demonstration DVD-A (Bela Fleck's 'The Bluegrass Sessions vol.2') - but if you play them on a normal DVD player the best you'll get is a compressed Dolby Digital alternative.

Ahhhh I see. Still it's quite good listening to your favorite albums in 5.1 DD even if it is compressed.

Pablo - just wondering if you (or anyone else that is reading this), have managed to hear this DVDA release yet?
As far as I can tell, my Sony 725 DVD player cannot decode DVD-A, so I would have to settle for either the 5.1 or DTS mixes for just now. But earlier on tonight, I dug out the Freddy Mercury Solo Video Collection DVD, and the DD 5.1 quality just blew me away! So I can only imagine for just now what full on DVD-A quality would be like. It is also been very encouraging to read this from Brain May.
A Night At The Opera DVD won an award recently, Brian was very pleased! He had this to say: " I'm thrilled that our "A Night at the Opera" surround sound DVDA won the award! Fabulous! And really glad that the "We Will Rock You" performance DVD didn't win! It could have been so great - but they contented themselves with a "Silk Purse out of a Sow's Ear" sound quality, instead of risking the extra money to let us remix it properly in DTS 5.1 surround. They frigged around with the old Stereo mix to make a kind of surrogate surround. Unfortunately the old mix was crap. I only wish we could have stopped them putting it out in this shoddy fashion - it's the only Concert footage which we don't own - we let this company called "Mobilvision" film us to put us on an experimantal large-screen show for "concert"- type audiences many years ago. So we lost control of this footage. Shame, and apologies to all - we hate having anything out there with our name on it which we don't consider to be up to scratch quality-wise.
Still, soon we'll have our own Concert DVD's out there, properly mixed in Surround - then people will realize the difference..... Meanwhile - I'm hoping, having just seen my DTS friend Rory in L.A., that the ANATO DVDA may be taken up as a standard by the industry, for use in demonstrating the forthcoming In-Car Surround Sound systems...... exciting indeed - I WANT one!!!!
We've been listening to the new mixes for the QUEEN GREATEST VIDEO HITS DVD - and they sound just spectacular - and there's the bonus of being able to see all the old Queen visual video's restored - plus a couple of extra surprises! I can't wait to see people's reactions.... release world-wide in a month's time or so I believe....
