Dolby Digital question
Question:

According to the DVD specifications, all discs have to have a Dolby Digital Soundtrack of one sort or another (this is why old films have a DD - albeit mono - soundtrack).
But DD2.0 seems to mean both Stereo and Prologic.
Surely Prologic encoded tracks should be DD4.0 (left/right/centre/rear). I've been wondering why It's described as 2.0 for some time.

Answers:

I think its cos prologic is not digital and the extra channels (front and rear) is extracted from the stereo track.

Answers:

AFAIK - DD4.0 indicates a track with dedicated stereo rears, unlike Pro-logic which has a matrixed rear mono channel taken from the DD2.0 stereo signal.

Saving Private Ryan DTS ?.

Answers:

Saving Private Ryan DTS ?.
As with all DTS discs, it should have a DD2.0 track also..

Answers:

ya, SPR:DTS has a Dolby Surround track as well

Answers:

NTSC DVDs may contain a PCM soundtrack rather than a Dolby Digital soundtrack, and PAL discs a PCM or MPEG soundtrack. Dolby Digital isn't mandatory, but is used in most cases as it requires so little space.

Answers:

If L, R, C, S are the front left, front right, front center and surround tracks of prologic, then the encoded stereo tracks L' and R' are
L'=L+0.707C+0.707S
R'=R+0.707C-0.707S
0.707 being the square root of 0.5.
