Advise on best value Micro HiFi
Question:

Apologies if I'm asking this in the wrong forum - I'm sure it'll be moved nice and quickly if it is :)
I'm looking at buying a new micro hi-fi and am after some advise as to what to go for.
My budget is £150 max - I know it's not a lot, but it's only something as a little extra to go into the living room.
I'm not after tape facilities - just something with a cd player and a connection to allow me to connect my laptop up to it for playing DVDs off my laptop. It definately needs to be a micro system and needs to look smart too.
Something that can play MP3 would be a brucey bonus - but not essential (and probably wouldn't fit my budget either).
Any recommendations please?

Headstar has move this in the right place, if you need a supplier for the recommended system, you can start a new thread in the supplier forum* :)

Yeah - I was initially looking at the Panasonic SCMP03 which is in Dixons for £122.58...
Your recommendation seems to be the next one up from this one.
Has anyone else got one of these - are they worth the money?
Keep those recommendations flooding in :)

Aiwa micro systems generally have the best sound quality at this kind of price (IMHO :D ).
Definately look for one with at least 10W rms per channel for a much richer sound quality. Ones with lower power sound much tinnier.
The Panasonic SCPM07 at about £150 looks way overpriced. It looks nice but only has 7.5w/channel and single drive unit speakers. The words "all style and no substance" spring to mind.
Though take a look at the latest Argos book. There are some tasty looking sub-£150 models.
The Thomson AM1485 has 2x15W rms output and plays MP3 for £139
Nice wooden looking 2-way speakers too with removeable grills. Being Argos , you could take it back for an easy refund if you didn't like it.

Thanks Simes... What are Thomson like for hifi's? I've had Aiwa in the past and never (touch wood) had any problems with them. In fact my Aiwa mini-hifi upstairs is 7yrs old and not had single fault... I've always thought of Thomson as a budget brand along the same lines as Bush and Alba... is Thomson perhaps between the Bush/Alba and Aiwa brand?

Nobody else with any recommendations/advise? :oh-hum:

I don't know what Thomson are like for HiFi, as i've never had one.
They are definately better than Bush and Alba though. The spec alone tells you that. Almost all Bush and Alba's are really low sub 5w output - hence really poor quality "tinny " sound.
For value for money the £79 Goodmans 1445 at Argos looks unbeatable value. It has 12.5W rms per channel for a powerful sound. Its also got remote control, random play on CD (vertical deck with motorised door), and an AUX input. It should sound a lot better than all the 5w systems that are around £99 ;)
