Is it okay to place the DVD player directly above the receiver?
Question:

Just wondering... my player is half-covering the ventilation holes of the amp. Is that likely to cause problems?

Answers:

Cost me repairs to my DVD player in the region of £110. Hot spot on amp was directly below hot spot on player.

Ventillation holes in electrical equipment is generally there for a reason, so I wouldn't cover them up for the sake of tidyness.

My 6 channel Sony gets too hot to touch sometimes, no do not put your DVD player on top, ever !

what about putting the receiver on top of the DVD player?

Answers:

That is a more acceptable solution, but the rule about covering ventilation holes still apply.

I've just got a Marantz SR7200 receiver and the usual warnings include the following:
- do not install the unit in a rack or bookshelf
- do not place anything about 1 metre above the top panel ( this is especially funny)
- do not insert objects beneath the unit
- make a space of about 0.2 metre around the unit.
I'm sorry, how practical is that??? At the moment I have it on the shelf beneath the TV but there is no way there's 20cm clearance all round and obviously not 1 metre space above it. But referring to the Marantz product brochure there are many photos of their gear stacked, including what looks like a SR6200 below a DV6200 DVD player - surely compromising their own recommendations? I think I shall ask Marantz what they have to say about this apparent contradiction.

Hehe, if I did that with My Pioneer Amp, my DVD player would be crushed. My Amp gets very hot after prolonged use, so I would not recommend sticking a DVD player over it.

Strange, my Yamaha HTR5540RDS doesn't even feel luke warm after it's been on for hours.
The entire top of the case is a huge grille, and i've touched it all over to see how warm it got, but so far nothing.
The back of the sub on the other hand gets pretty warm..

unfortuantely my unit has 3 items in each side - cd, cable box and video on one side, and shelves seperating them, but the other side is denon amp, tosh dvd in the middle and ps2 on top, with no shelves seperating them as they only just fit. the dvd player gets absolutely boiling.
This thread has made me think i need to sort this out, but don't know how :-((((((((((((((((((((

My Sony 725 was getting really hot, it now runs cool simply by increasing the headroom by about an inch. I can be that little that makes the difference.
Mine is on a shelf below the amp, but in an enclosed cabinet - I leave to door open when playing discs. The headroom is about 4 inches I guess.
My Xbox on the other hand, requires extra fans mounted in the cabinet! :)

:nono: NO,NO, and Thrise,,No,, you will also shorten the life of your amp. Buy a couple of those Transparent carpet protectors you put under furniture or Freezers (mine cost 89p for 4) and place your amp on top of your DVD player with these acting as spacers between the 2. This will allow air to flow through and keep both units cool.

Well I used Sky Digital Receiver on top of my Sony 735 DVD player - no problem.
While my dreamcast and Gamecube is on top of my video in a shelf below.

Answers:

Ah well,,thats because you put your Receiver on top of your DVD player,,not Ideal,,but don't do it the other way around, and it's still best to use spacers as well,,just to be on the safe side.

I can't repeat this enough,Never EVER put ANYTHING! especially a DVD player ON TOP of your amp,,(or an NTL/Sky cabel/Sat. box),,or indeed anything that has Air vents on the Top,,.:nono:

Its strange, in the SONY manual, it says nothing about placing it above an amp, only 'Away from strong heat sources' yet my Sammy m105's manual did, the Sammy never got hot yet my Sony does.
If there was enough space between the amp/DVD and it didnt get hot, is that ok? or is it also about magnetic fields etc etc?

Answers:

Well,,even if your Sony gets Hot naturally (due to the Heat cync,,or is it Sync,,,what ever)it will only get Hot where it is designed to. You shouldn't place anything on top of anything with air slots. Not only because of heat passing through and over heating whats on top, but because of heat being also being reflected back in to the Unit underneith, this will cause over heating in parts of the Unit that are not designed to get so hot and shorten the life of both units (and cause no end of problems) In the case of Sat/Cabel decoder Box's and video players that are left on all the time,,you could also end up burning your house down, (Bugger!!! that always seems to happen when your not around,,have you noticed??)
