DTS-ES, Dolby EX worth it?
Question:

I'm currently redecorating the front room, and am putting the wiring for the surround speakers and subwoofer under the laminate flooring.
I was wondering whether it was worth adding an set of cables so I could upgrade to ES, EX at some point in the future, without ripping up the floor.
Anyone have any experience of either, and whether they're a worthwhile upgrade? Also, are there any other upcoming sound standards that require extra wiring that I might consider?
Thanks in advance.

Answers:

it is worth it imho i upgraded to a denon 2802 with dts es/ddex decoding and in movies where its encoded such as gladiator and the lord of the rings it adds so much to the movie experience.
i use the surround back modes on all my movies as well it just seems to fill the room wilth sound

In order to prevent you "ripping" your floor up it's a defo must to install cables just in case. IMHO it's also worth it for the experience - although I've presently got a single centre rear when infact I think something like a 77ds or similar would be better to difuse the sound. (I did have a couple of speakers running in series and with hindsight I would have preferred to keep them as they provided a more convincing rear effect)

Okay, so from an existing 5.1 setup I just need one additional speaker cable in the rear centre?

You can get away with just one. The instructions with my Denon 3801 suggested using a pair, however.

I have a Denon 2802 with 6 speakers and the living room becomes completly immersed in sound, and Helecopters panning round the rears sound just awesome.
Gladiator with the Arrows at the beginning also sounds amazing, in fact the whole bloody film does.
go for it :smokin: :smokin: :smokin:

Problem is, if it's directly behind you then your ears won't be able to discern it from your front centre speaker. Not often a problem but could be shown up if an object is moving across the soundstage (especially from over your shoulder).
I think THX recommend two speakers at 150 and 210 degrees from the TV (even if they are hooked up to the same amp channel)
