Question:
a mate bought an alba 108 from argos on friday, it had an optical output.
i bought one today and it didn't.
does anyone know anything about this ??
sure they're the same model number?
yes, both alba 108.
just an update for anyone thinking of buying an alba 108.
argos's 'new' stock is a version WITHOUT an optical out connection. so if you desparately want one with an optical out, ask to see it before you leave the store.
a little tip if the stores stock are all 'new' models, ask to see the display model as this is very likely to be 'old' stock.
Do you get a digital coax output?
If there's no digital output at all and the player states Dolby Digital and/or DTS then sue them, as they have no right to put those labels on there claiming it supports those formats if it can't at the very least chuck the signal out to an external decoder/amp.
If it does have coax though, just use that. Optical isn't any different other than the leads are more expensive. Unless of course your decoder/amp doesn't have a coax input :D.
coax output is better anyway.

Burn him at the stake!!! ;)
my comments were really just aimed at those who may want a simple way of transferring regular cd/mp3 files to mini-disc (me !!) i.e. via the optical output.

Ah, that could be a problem then. You could use a converter of some sort if there is such a thing. I think my amp has an optical out as well as a bunch of optical inputs and coax in. The out is supposed to be for a MD, but whether that means it could output via. optical from any input (i.e. coax in, optical out), I'm not sure. A bit costly to buy an A/V amp just to do the task, but if you've already got such an amp...
