Question:
Hello people, just a quick question please!
I was told by somone that although he has a DVD player with a built-in DTS decoder; the signal is not decoded when used via the optical cable! I assume this not to be true but can somone just claify please?
In addition, he's using a Toshiba 5.1 TV and is attempting to connect his DVD playter to it via the optical cable and get DTS; is this possible? Does his TV / Amp have to be DTS enabled as well or does it just have to be decoded via the DVD to play DTS on a 5.1 TV?
Sorry for the lack of inforamtion but I don;t really know much in this area! Any help would be great!
Thanks! :)
the toshiba 5.1 tvs are only dolby digital
If the DVD player only has a digital out socket ie no 5.1 phono sockets, then it hasn't got a built in decoder and will require an external DTS amp/receiver/processor to decode the bitstream..
If the player definitely has a DTS decoder built in, then it will have 5.1 phono outs (analog) on the back for plugging into a 5.1 ready Amp (which may or may not have DTS etc) or TV etc.
The optical output on any player will only ever carry a 'bitstream'. This bitstream always needs decoding, so if you wish to connect the player to an amp via the optical out, then you need DTS decoding on the amp.
Hope that makes sense. It comes down to distinguishing between a decoded (and there for 10+ x phono outs) signal and a bitstream (single optical out) signal from the player.
