Question:
How far away should u sit from tv (24 inch widescreen tv in bedroom type setup) whats the ideal setup??
I'm about 2m from my 32" ws tv.
I think 5- 6ft probably be fine. For sitting down and playing the games on my dreamcast - 3-4 feet, and when lying on the bed watching movies I watch it about 5-6 ft away.
I do wish I had a 42 inches Plasma TV or a 32 inches Panasonic TV in my bedroom ;-(
I'm sure I remember some sort of formula/ estimate for this... 3-5 times the diagonal of the screen should be equivalent to your watching distance?
something like that.
dorgan, 2m is pretty close for a 32" TV?
focal length, eye strain and all that. ?
I'm watching a 28" from about 7-8 ft.
It doesn't matter how far away you are, your eyeballs ain't gonna fry as long as you are a reasonable distance.
We sit 6ft away from a 32 inch tv with no problems.

really? surely its not good in terms of eye strain to be sitting some close, forcing your eyes to focus on something that wide?
for example, I cant sit and watchg from the front row of a cinema... just too close and painful to focus your eyes on. yes, its possible but not good. 5-10 rows back is perfect though
the same must apply to TVs.. yes, it can be viewable, but is it straining your eyes... field of view and all that?...
my view anyway... and I do remember the viewing distance diagonal thing being mentioned in HCC.
deja posts seem to confirm this... either using the diagonal or screen height.
mind you, I do watch my 102" diagonal pj screen from about 18-20 ft back so I dont mind using a smaller screen for normal stuff.:p

This always baffles me. Say I upgrade to a larger screen and use this "formula" to work out the new sitting distance from my new tv. Haven't I just defeated the purpose of buying a larger screen by going back even further from it and thus having back the original viewing size?
MartinC: Never had any problems sitting that distance for over 2 years now. My girlfriend neither and she would be the first to complain about being too close ;)
sitting close to the computer is bad for you, TV should be fine as long as you are further away than 4 ft or more.

:) this I can believe.
horses for courses I suppose.
my eyesight is happily 50:50 but I prefer not to strain my eyes at all given the choice.
at this distance (6ft for 32"), do you get visible scanlines on NTSC or non-anamorphic widescreen material?
cant help the surround sound effect from your speakers by being this close to the centre either...
just a different point of view anyway.
