Help!!
Question:

I've just bought a dvd player, sony dvpns700, and set it up last night with my widescreen tv to watch my first dvd, MI2. The thing is it played it in letterbox with a black strip at the top and bottom of the screen. I was under the impression that this would not happen because of anamorphic dvds. I had my TV set to automatic which usually sorts this out from the normal TV signal. I was able to eliminate this by switching the TV to 16:9L but it looks crap. Help!!! Is it me or can it be sorted

Answers:

Have you set the DVD output (in the setup menu) to widescreen (16:9) or letterbox. You need to switch it to widescreen. The TV should also be in widescreen but if you have RGB output to input on TV the auto switching should work.
There may still be some black bars according to the aspect ratio. IIRC if MIB2 was for example 2:35:1 then even if anamorphic there may still be some bars. (I could be wrong on that mind!)

Hi,
I have dvd output set to 16:9 and also RGB output. Will it always show these bars if 2:35:1 is the aspect ratio? If so doesn't this drive you mad??

Answers:

yep - anamorphic will only stretch the picture so far with 2.35:1, any more and it would all be out of ratio. Take a look at this for an excellent piece on anamorphic. www.dvdweb.co.uk/information/anamorphic.htm
Just turn off the lights and all you'll see is the picture :)

Cheers mate,
suppose I'll get used to it. Any articles on audio, 5:1 V's ProLogic?

Answers:

Haven't seen anything specific, but I'm sure there's something out there. Always found area450 to be good for all sorts of info/tips. www.area450.com/homecinema/avdefinitions.htm
If you've got any particular questions put a post on here and someone will always help.

Answers:

go for 5.1, over prologic anyday. with prologic you get a combined rear channel, rather than the seperate left & right that you do with 5.1
