Question:
Ive recently purchased a Yelo 800 DVD player after reading a lot of good things about it. It comes with build in DD 5.1 output and I need some advice on a potential 5.1 speaker system.
Im looking for a decent budget 5.1 speaker system which I assume wont need its own DD decoder.
What kind of budget speaker system should I be looking for?
Thanks

The onboard decoder of the DVD player is for connecting to a pro-logic amp that has the 5.1 inputs - a feature that was usefull back in `97 when dolby digital amps cost over £500, but usless today.
You need to buy an amp / receiver to drive the speakers, you cannot plug the speakers into the dvd and expect that to power them! So you have the option of an all in one pack such as a Digitheatre or Sony HTK pack, or a seperates amp and speaker pack. Either way you need to spend more then you probably expected...
I appologise for being a complete newb when it comes to this sort of thing.
You said that it would be used to connect to a pro-logic amp that has the 5.1 input but my player has in its own 5.1 speaker surround sound output. There are sockets to plug in the 5 speakers and sub but then I understand what you mean by needing something to power the speakers.
So your saying I would need amp to power them and there is no way to connect speakers directly into the 5.1 output sockets. So what exactly is the point of dvd players having 5.1 outputs if your going to need a seperate thing anyway and cant plug the speakers straight in. You might as well just use the coaxial digital output right? Whats the point of having a 5.1 speaker sockets?
You gets what you pays for : there are a number of cheap powered speaker packages (eg the Reoc all in one thing for £60 available at Safeways) that specifically require a DVD player with an on-board decoder : the packages concentrate on amplification, the player on decoding.
Despite the pessimism above, there are still some ProLogic amps around to buy that have 5.1 inputs capable of allowing the DVD player to do the decoding (eg Richer Sounds do a cheap Sony for about £120 - you'd still need to buy speakers though).
However, for better quality the route you suggest is right : digital amplifier and speakers is the way to go. No offence, but for a budget player like the Yelo, something like the new Cyberhome speaker package or the Reoc one will be the best you can do for under a ton :)
Thanks for the advice :)
Just to let you know .... I'm using the reoc speakers plugged into my on-board decoder from safeway which i find great as I've only got a small room and a small budget !!
