You *can* play VCDs on a Sony DAVS300, what you have done is made some CD-R discs with VCD images / files, onto CD-R, which the machine cannot play. If you buy original VCD discs, the machine *will* play them.
I have one of these and had the same problem as you until I found the right CDR. It would only work with "DataSafe Original" CDR's. The same went for audio cd's too. Once I found these I had very few problems. These are no longer in production. I recently finished my supply of these disks and thought the new DataSafe Diamond CDR would work but no!
I have now decided to sell the DAV-S300 and get a cheap (£99) Kiiro from Amazon.
It's a bit drastic but I was getting fed up of re-encoding my svcd'd into vcd format anyway. The disk incompatibility issue was the final straw.

Copy your CD-R material onto CD-RW discs and try playing these. Most DVD players will happily read the contents of CDRWs.
