Closed Captions. Some questions...
Question:

Hi,
How can i display Closed Captions? As far as i know, in the USA they are displayed by a decoder inside the television set. But here in Portugal, it doesn't exist.
Are there any dvd players that can display Closed Captions?
It still a struggle to understand everything that Tony Soprano mutters.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks...

Answers:

All US tvs over 13" have to have a built in CC decoder by law.
Most European countries decided not to use the CC system, instead they use various systems, like teletext in the UK.
You will need a closed caption decoder.
Try contacting the European Captioning Institute as they might be able to supply details of where you can buy one.

I am a deaf guy and you can decode close captiion on DVD.
Most R1 use Close caption for subtitles and it work very well, but do be careful when ordering DVDs as some company (i.e. New Line Cinema ) published they have close captive subtitles when it doesn't have them ie Thirteen Days and 15 minutes.
I have a Sony 735 DVD player and PC DVD Rom which work well.
You don't have to buy anything else. Just make sure the DVD player decode them. I don't know which one doesn't as I don't look at other DVD players.
I find that many DVDs from R1 doesn't put subtitles on special features especially when they use close captive.

my toshiba 510 can decode the close captions, there is an option to turn it on in the players menu

If what you guys are telling me is real (i.e. there are actually dvd players (not dvd-rom) with a Closed caption Decoder built-in) then that is fantastic.
I'm not deaf, but although my English is above average, i still struggle with some of the shows who don't have subtitles. The "Sopranos" comes to mind.
If anyone else wants to comment, please do. It's very important to me. I have a Toshiba SD-2109 but i guess i must start looking for an alternative.
Thanks guys. :)

I just went throught both players specs but couldn't find any reference to a closed captions built-in decoder. Maybe it's only on the dvd manuals?!!!

Answers:

The plot thickens.
I read my player's manual and there is an option called "Extended Subtitle Features" which apparently is to be used to display Closed Captions. I placed it on "ON" and...nothing happened. Still can't see them Closed Captions.
My player is a Toshiba SD-2109. Anyone knows why it doesn't work?

Try pressing subtitles button and change language until you find it.

i dont think every movie is close captioned though , if you look on the back of the dvd case it should say [cc] on the back somewhere and if it does close caption will work i just tested my tosh 510 again and there is an option to turn [cc] on in the navi menu, i tried the world is not enough r1 which is close captioned switch on the [cc] and it works, the effect is different from subtitles with the text appearing next to the person who spoke as well a sounds be described

Chas,
I believe you. As i've said, i've been reading my player's manual and indeed there is that option. I have it activated, but it doesn't work. Maybe it's my television. Maybe my multi-region chip has somehow disabled that function, i don't know. I know what shows are Closed Caption [CC]. I've been trying the "Sopranos", "Twin Peaks", "Oz" and none of them work.
I really don't know what to do.
Does your player have a chip or do you choose the region with your remote?
Thanks Chas. :)

Answers:

it is auto multiregion i think it is chipped

Answers:

Hi Chas,
Well, if you don't have to use your remote to change the region, then it must be chipped and is automatic.
Cheers :)
