Argos and Philips 880 DVD recorder
Question:

Ok so whos managed to get one of those 880's so far dixons and pretty much everywhere seems sold out, more to the point did you manage to buy it from Argos?
If your story is anything like mine the answer is NO.
Here it goes,
Been hearing alot about the 880 over the weekend so decided to go buy one dixons sold out, popped over to argos used the little machine and turns out one left Display Model had a look on the shelves there she is 880 sitting just out of reach pop over to the till jockey to see if I can have it all very nice has to shout for Brian hes there dvd expert so he can grab it from the shelves after a bit of a wait he turns up but now its gettin late and I should be at work so I have to leave it will pop back tommorow, but I also ask about discs not having the chance to look in the catalogue Brian insists they dont sell them guess he should know being the expert and all ( ohh by the way they cant search for a item in the catalogue on there puter ) so short of routing through the whole thing no order number means I cant but it and afterall they dont stock it.
Anyways pop back today (after phoning customer services to see whats the chance of getting some discount on display model lady tells me manager can do it just have to try and ask, and findin discs in catalogue) look on the shelf it gone, pop to enquiries they have put it buy, cool pay for it then wait half a hour for them to try putting it in a box, got to go so tell the guy ill come back later to pick up, he tells me better be back in a hour as they are not ment to keep hold of stuff.
This seems a bit **** Ive paid for it what they going to do refuse to give it to me if Im late.
One hour 45 min later get back ( im at work) guy tells me jokingly I should have been back sooner, (WAN*ER)
Oh yeah no chance of discount as its really is brand new only put on the shelf Friday no marks at all.
Grab it all get back to work AARRRGGHHHH after taking it out of the box notcing a large scratch on the top edge where the silver has rubbed off also little sticky strip has been pulled of the disply also now faintly scratched.... its a bloody 980.
Go straight back to shop talk to brian again this is the right model latest on etc. nope dont want it no mp3 no 2.5 hour mode plus its marked, and so begins another wait of 45mins whilst he first rings a load of other stores the all have the same model 980
then the contacts philips who apperently insist this is the latest model, what do I need those features for all afterall he asks no offer of discount.
So I finally get a refund, as I leave it hits me Im sure when I looked at it on monday it looked different some how darker less silvery more like the 880, Im no starting to think he grabbed the 880 off the shelf then dusted of a old 980 hoping I wouldnt notice.
I plan on going in again to chek the display if I see the 880 back out again the **** will hit the fan.
Well ive orderd the 880 from there website will it be anther 980 I wonder?

Don't use ******* high street shops as they are crap and expensive. Only use it as a showroom then buy if off internet ie
www.unbeatable.co.uk
www.empiredirect.co.uk
I saw a 42 inches Panasonic Plasma TV in Dixons which nearly cost 8 grand in Brum and on the internet you can buy it for 3,800 quids.

Yes, it's cheaper to buy off the net and you can always return the goods under the "Distance selling regulations" if you're not entirely happy...
I do happen to own a DVDR980 though, which (contrary to what your post suggests!) is a fine machine. I know you weren't really knocking it per se, but I must re-assure people that getting a 980 wouldn't be like buying a cut-and-shut! (okay, you didn't go that far, but still..).
I used a simple handset hack to make mine multi-region and it even plays RCE titles without any difficulty. Aesthetically speaking, I prefer the 980 anyway, as the 880 looks like a Cheapo Samsung effort to me! (though I admit I'm biased)...

I've just used the argo website to reserve a machine to pick at my local store. They seem to have it in stock no problems, have the disks available too but at a horrendous price-- £15 each for £70 for five!!

Sorry for the "out of date" information as they have JUST put their price up by £60!
Try the following link for £399 + £20 delivery ( IF YOU ARE QUICK )

Apparently it is a VERY POPULAR machine at present with limited stocks EVERYWHERE.

dont buy from Argos. Went there last night to buy one.
Their new catalogue priced it at £599, website at £499. Reserved by website went to it up. The till rang it up at £499.
When the machine came out from the storeroom it was the older 980 model!!
Seems someone has done a big cockup in the stock inventory and catalogue proof reading
