Is there anything that can be done...
Question:

other than buying a new dvd player?
I own a Toshiba SD-2109 chipped for multi-region. Couldn't be happier with it. I own 200 + dvds and never had any trouble. Smooth layer changer, never rejected a disc, silent playing. The only drawback: it doesn't read cd-r and cd-rw.
Until now. In the last two months, i bought two dvds that gave me problems:
1 . Dimmu Borgir - "World Misanthropy"
Wouldn't load at all. Got a replacement. Still wouldn't load. Found a way to enter it anyway (pressing stop when the loading sign was up and then pressing play seemed to work).
2 . Korn - "Deuce"
Upon loading, the FBI warning appears all fuzzy, like there are several images superimposed. This continues throughout the intro then clears for the menu. From the menu on it's an hit and miss affair. Try to play the 2 main features and the image appears again fuzzy and superimposed. Other features seem to work fine (the extras, i believe). None of the video-clips work either.
Tried both on a friend's player and they played without any problems.
I'm not very technical minded, so is there anything i can do to solve this problem?
I've been told to try and find out on the net if there is a firmware for my player. The problem is that i don't really know what a firmware is. Is it replacing the initial multi-region chip for a newer version?
Anything else that can be done?
Sorry if this seems very basic, but anyway...
Thanks for your help,
Wolverine

Answers:

could be something as simple as the lens could be dirty... try get a lens cleaner from somewhere (richersounds/HMV/Virgin etc) and give that a go
good luck

As it only affects 2 discs, and the problem you discribe dos not suggest a drive or laser alignment problem, it is most likely due to the disc pressing or format.
You don`t mention what your friends player is, but its probably not another 2109.

Hi,

Do these really work? I remember back in the VHS days horrible stories about VHS cleaning tapes which did more damage than good. Anyone tried a lens cleaner around here?

I doubt it, because it plays on my friends dvd player and on my dvd-rom. Must be a compatibility issue, i don't know.

You're right, it isn't. It's a Samsung, although i don't remember what model.
If anyone has any other advices, they're welcome
Thanks guys.
