shortcut to speakers, i think that the link works (http://www.richersounds.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?load=frame)
the model i was looking at is SSCR190 3-speaker package, the ones shown are £10 extra model: SSCR290

Answers:

The extra speakers are, respectively, center, left-rear surround & right-rear surround, and enable 5 channel DD/DTS soundtracks via a home cinema enabled amp/mini-system using the regular stereo speakers as front left/right.
Is your system a surround sound system ie does it feature pro-logic decoding? If not you will need a separate cinema amplifier to decode the signals from your dvds/tapes and to power the additional 3 speakers.
Bear in mind that even if your system is pro-logic enabled (it won't be DD/DTS given it's age), you really need an amplifier that is at least Dolby Digital equipped in order to benefit from the high quality surround soundtracks provided on DVD's.

thanks for that GIZMO, i think i will have to wait to xmas b4 i get one, perhaps i might go for a package amp + speakers, this will make films much more intresting, the wife is the only hurdle.
perhaps i might ask on the forums around xmas time.
thanks for your time
am i right in saying
thx is the best followed by dts-es then dts

Answers:

Well it gets complicated really - thx is a lucasfilm standard which is meant to ensure both a certain level of performance which is as close to the listening experience in a cinema auditoriumm and that any thx approved equipment is likely to match and provide a coherent sound regardless of manufacturer. So it is, as you say, a good thing.
That's not to say you should disregard any non-thx certified equipment. Yamaha are one of the leading exponents of home cinema amplification yet they shun thx and use their own proprietary surround modes on top of DD/DTS.
Whether DTS is better than DD is subjective and an argument that will never be solved! Full rate DTS does seem to be better but if you have an amp which decodes both you can make this decision on a disc by disc basis if necessary.
Whether the extra surround channels in Dolby Digital EX or DTS-ES are worth the extra hassle (due to the extra speakers) from her indoors only you can decide! Me, I like an easy life so haven't broached the possibility of an ugly rear centre(or 2) speaker!!!!!! Dolby Pro-logic II which provides a simulated 5 channel surround track from a 4 channel source (tv, vhs) def seems to be worthwhile having.
Whichever system you go for its worth it, even my missus loves dvds now. And with discrete all-in-one systems available its easier than ever to sneak it past a disapproving wife.
