Question:
I just tried my (almost) 2 year old Sony 735 and it won't play any disk. I can hear it trying to read the disk so it must be the laser at fault. Are there any good cleaners I can try before I give this to someone to open it up?
Tell me more about your problems as I have the same DVD player.
It takes about 6 seconds for it to give up trying to read any disk, then says 'No Disk' on the player.
It was working perfectly last night, and nobody has knocked it in the mean time.
Try switch the power off and leave it off for 20 seconds and switch it back on then put in the DVD (and pray), as it might work or not.
If not, try a different DVD disc.
Tried that already, the laser definately needs re-adjusting.
Perhaps you should took it back for repairs. If it is not multi-region version, ask them to be chipped as well ;-)
(Ask them for me what the best way to clean DVD drive for me please)
Michael
I would send it back to where I bought it. However I stupidly bought it from Techtronics, and there is no way I am going to send the player back to them (going from the experience of others on these forums, I doubt i'd ever see it again if I sent it back). It's multiregion already so all I need is a small repair, i'll go into town at the weekend and see if anyone repirs dvd players.

Common fault with this range (and previous range) of sony models, usually means the drive has packed in and will need replacing... Won`t ready any DVD at all, but still plays CDs yes? Don`t expect a cheap repair either:(
No it won't play cds either.
Glad to read this thread. I'm getting a new dvd player looks like I'll be leaving Sony alone, sorry to hear about your problem though.
You have to remember this is an old model, it is no longer made, so I wouldn't be put off. If I have to buy a replacement dvd player, I may well make it another Sony.
My DVD Player, Phillips 710, has slowly been deteriorating, i.e. failing to read some Discs, but reading others, and as the Weeks / Months tick on, the List of Discs it won't read Grows, while on the Other Side of the Coin, the List diminishes.
To get to the Point, I've been told to suspect it to be the Laser, by Forum Members, and that a Repair would be costly to the Point of Preferably buying a New Player, although I suppose it depends on the Cost / Value of the Player in Question.
