Question:
Anyone had any experience of either of these formats ? I would like to try either of these out and will be buying a new DVD player soon that I would like to be compatible with one or the other formats.
Looking around on the web there doesn't seem to be too many discs released in either format. Would I be correct in assuming that you'll only get Sony Music artists on SACD and everybody else on DVD-A ?
opt for the Pioneer 747 and get the best of both worlds.
software for SACD is more plentiful at the moment and releases are increasing. Not as much DVD-A software around at the moment but manufacturers are still pledging support for it.
I've not heard DVD-A but used to have a 2 channel SACD player and the sound from that even with standard CDs had much more clarity and depth.

Does look like a very nice player indeed but at £750 @ Home Cinema Heaven it's a bit out of my price range :(
Looks like it might have to be one that plays SACD then, I seem to remember I saw a Sony one for about £200
Richers are selling the Sony 700 for 199 multiregion.
Well recommended. SACD sounds fab BTW.
I got a Pioneer 747A and its an amazing piece of kit. Very impressed with it :D
Ive heard thru the grapevine (Justin@UpgradeHeaven), that Pioneers forthcoming 656 will be SACD and DVDA and MUCH cheaper than the 747A (<£400)

Well, then that's when I will be upgrading!!!!! :D
But will it have progressive scan ?
Now if we could have a DVD player with multi region support, progressive scan in pal and ntsc, record things, and play DVD audio or SACD and that would be perfick ;-)
I can't fault my Denon A1 for playing DVD Audio.
Maybe soon Denon will get round to 'modifying' it to play SACD as well - it does everything else except make toast!
Happy with my 747 and I have tried both formats. Both are excellent and your point about only Sonly artists being on SACD is not quite correct. The unfortunate part is there are very few discs to try still. If your a classical fan there's plenty of choice otherwise it's quite limited.
For SACD if you like Frankie Goes To Hollywood there "Rage Hard- The Sonic Collection" is an absolute cracker and it's also a Hybrid disc which gives you the ability to compare standard Cd, 2 channel and multi channel SACD. BTW it's only available from www.ztt.com at the moment.
The day bands like Travis, R.E.M. , Coldplay, Stereophonics, Prodigy, Daft Punk, New Order get released on SACD or DVD-A is the day i'll take the format seriously :D

I have noticed that most of the discs on the two formats seem to be either classical or from rock dinosaur types. Miss E Elliot's last album is out on DVD-A and Groove Armada's last album is out on SACD, so there's a least one album I'd like on both formats.
The Pioneer 656 does sound quite nice, but I'd hope that for the price the DVD-V quality is still good. The player that I'd end up buying would still be primarily for DVD-V and with the DVD-A/SACD playback as a nice extra.
I use to have a Pioneer 646D. I never thought a picture improvement was possible. A friend of mine came over who owns a DRC Sony with a Toshiba 500E. He was amazed by my picture quality and actually admitted to it being better than his.
It just shows a high quality DVD Player like the Pioneer 747A makes a hell of a difference. The machine is perfect, Outstanding Video, Outstanding Sound, Loads of features and all the compatability you'll ever need. SACD, DVD-A ,MP3 , VCD, SVCD & works with CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW.
The Pioneer 656 sounds pretty good for the price, but build quality or design in my view "LOOKS" a beat weak, but obviously thats cause its miles cheaper. For those who are interested this is it:

What do you want for under £400? :) Yes the idea of a box that does everything is good, BUT:
If you were going to spend £1500 or more on a prog scan enabled projector, Tv or indeed a plasma, would you buy really buy the cheapest DVD player with prog scan? Does that mean that you would buy a skoda, because its got all the same features as something like a VW or audi at a third less of the price:)
Hope you see my point, but costs are cut by manufactures to cram more features into a box for less money. This usually (Toshiba comes to mind) at the expense of build and reliability.
A DV656A for under £400 will be a blinding machine, for the very fact that it will play all formats out there. Even if its got prog scan (which i don`t believe it has), don`t expect it to outperform something like a DV747A or an Arcam DV27:(
You simply get what you pay for :)
This month's WHF have just rave reviewed the Pioneer 656 and gave it http://www.bapapapa.btinternet.co.uk/star.gifhttp://www.bapapapa.btinternet.co.uk/star.gifhttp://www.bapapapa.btinternet.co.uk/star.gifhttp://www.bapapapa.btinternet.co.uk/star.gifhttp://www.bapapapa.btinternet.co.uk/star.gif
Said the build quality wasn't up to it's bigger brother's standards, but at half the price who's complaining..
Bet it doesn't come in black.. :(
