Question:
MP3 Playback on MP3 Capable DVD Players
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In Mp3 playback mode, it would appear that most players do not preserve the folder hiearchy in which you first burned your CD of MP3 music. Most brands expensive and cheap tend to display the content of an MP3 CDR sequentially, which is a real pain in the a*** and something that the manufacturers I have contacted to date don't seem to hung up on fixing!
Models of player I have experienced the problem with are:
Pioneer DVD Players to Date (confirmed by Manufacturer today to affect the whole range)
Goodmans GDVD125 (as I just returned one on this basis)
however, exceptions to this rule have been:
===============================
Dansai (Famous Tesco Bargain, however not sure where these can be obtained and a little concerened about Pic quality, however I note all the postive reviews ... so perhaps best to bite the dust and part with £90 or less for one of these!)
Sanyo 9201 (however, thislet me down with distorted picture and loss of contrast/brightness randomly on DVD playback consistently, with no recognition by Sanyo on the MP3 issue and the lack of user friendliness)
But hey, perhaps its me... I am too demanding as far as a consumer goes??? Should I be sacrificing my standards and dropping the "customer is always right" routine???
So as you see I have been around the mill on this one. A small feature which I think most of us would like to see to make things a little user friendly and less time consuming when wanting to review which tracks we want to listen to i,e, on the basis of folders organised by album name/artist name!
Beside what if you just want to mark certain MP3 tracks for playback and hence compose a "playlist", hell is this too difficult to implement... I don't think so.... (Quality assurance engineer speaking)
Why is it all cheaper alternatives of device can provide this mp3 folder support e.g. the Diamond Rio, the NAPA drive can all do this and they cost on average less than £60 quid!
In summary, anyone know of a reasonably priced DVD player which supports all those "necessary" modes of playback i.e. SVCD and MP3 (WITH FOLDER SUPPORT) as I am running out of both time and patience with the manufacturers!
Hell... I don't consider a "slimline" case to be of much material consequence... given that it reduces the cooling space... give us fully functional DVD players that work... hell the standards are in place and if they can't do this then they ought to have dedicated support which is prepared to act on finding a solution. It appears it left to webprogrammers to often find the answer... to me this translates as let the big brand names off the hook???
Come on folks,,,,,, be more demanding!!!!! hell there is an IT recession ... heck criticism is what spurs invention....!!!!!!!I'm sure there is a better saying... but anyhow...
recommendations would be appreciated taking into account what I have said already.... remember "Mp3 folder support"... you know if it comes down to it ... I will take the PC (with DVD player inbuilt) and place it next to the DVD and connect it via the AV of the graphics card... but hell I did'nt buy all that nice shiny silver finished equipment to sit and gather dust!!!!
Bit rich moaning about it, tbh..
Surely a DVD player's primary function is to play DVDs? As long as it does that well, then anything else like MP3 support is a bonus...
btw - no need to drag your PC over to the AV rack, just hook it to the receiver with the necessary length phono/digital cables and use the PC as normal..
Most players use one of a small selection of far-eastern decoder chips, and once upon a time someone sitting at an expensive workstation designing chip layouts probably found a bit of spare space on the die, remembered they'd been working on a simple mp3 decoding chip earlier and stuck it it the hole...
..so, the reason they all seem the same is cos they all are the same.
Except this US player, made by Sampo, called the DVE631CF which has full 26 character support for MP3s, preserves the folders (full names), plays back .mpg files as well as .vob files, and also has full VCD/SVCD support to boot.

The firmware is so popular there are no literally thousands of people around the world with players (some not even made by Sampo, although they do have to have matching hardware) that have it : if you can get your hands on an old Encore DV450 or Wharfedale M5, you can use it too as clever bods have been able to add in SCART functionality too. Oh, and naturally MV-off and multi-reggion : it's the dog's proverbials : see here (http://www.area450.com/firmware/unofficialfirmware.htm)
Incidentally, with this firmware you can also add any IDE component you care to, and yes that includes a hard drive for a 120GB jukebox of .mp3s etc (see here (http://www.area450.com/thesampozone/articles/connectindex.htm). This is because the DVE631CF has a Compact Flash card reader : released in July 2001 in the US a full year before Sony tried to claim they'd "invented" the first memory card readable player :rolleyes:
Now, why is it us Sampo fans are called "hardcore wireheads" again :confused:
