Question:
Hello,
can anybody recommend a good amp with 5.1 converter (player is a Pioneer 444) at a reasonable price, probably around £ 250-300 (or less)???
Thanx in advance!
Yamaha DSPAX620 for £199 from Richersounds. great reviews in the press
Looks good, great price also, but does this one convert the Pioneer 444, which doesn't support 5.1 to 5.1 output?
It doesn't say anything about that on the richersounds web-site.
without looking up the pioneer's specs I would presume it has an optical or coaxial digital output which will connect to the yamaha's optical or coaxial input to decode into 5.1 sound.
this is how many of the budget amps and players hook up to play surround digital sound

It's how virtually all amps decode 5.1 sound!
You just need a player with a coaxial or optical out connected to the same input on an amp.
You only need to use the 5.1 inputs (i.e six phonos to six phonos) if you have an older pro-logic amp, if the player has an internal decoder better than the amp (unlikely) or if you need to utilise the SACD/DVD audio abilities of the player.
For the price the Yamaha DSPAX620 is excellent. I had one but now have a Denon 3802. The Denon is miles better but then it costs four times as much. For £199 the Yamaha is a steal.

Yeah, that is how the majority of amps and players decode. Just saying that you wouldn't necessarily get a seperate 5.1 input on a budget amp
I've got the 3802's predecessor the 3801 after moving up from a Yamaha and the ful EX/ES sound is fantastic. Would love to compare DTS Nep 6 against pro-logic II which is the only format the 3801 lacks

IMO Pro Logic 2 shades DTS Neo 6. I've only ever used the DTS for comparison.
However, the DSP Matrix mode is superb for 5 or 7 channel stereo.
I love my Denon. And tonight I get to test it with a new Arcam DV88. Should be something indeed!
You should get the region 1 version of Gladiator and put the DTS ES track through it. Another good demo is the DTS version of the Appollo 13 launch in *ta-da* Appollo 13 LOL
Thanx for helping, wanted to go for the Yamaha, but I'm in Ireland where richersounds UK don't seem to ship.
Their store here in Dublin has the same model priced € 569,95 (approx. £ 362), which is slightly out of my range.
So sadly this one seems out of the question, have to look on then.
Any other recommendations are always welcome.
Thanx!

What you mean is you need an amp or receiver with a onboard DD/DTS decoder, which is the norm. Any receiver / amp advertised as Dolby digital or DTS will do the job, the only choice you need to make is which one you want!
I`ll be putting the VSXD511 (Pioneer) on the bargain forums shortly for under £200, which offers everything you need, plus includes Dolby Pro-Logic 2.
I`m sure you`ll find something under £200, theres plenty out there.
Hope the above helps
Thanx Justin,
the VSXD511 looks interesting, I also consider the Yamaha NSP220 speaker package.
What would the shipping cost to Ireland (Dublin) be? (approx.)
