Carol Gilbey video
Question:

I have only been qualified in reflexology since February this year and am still finding my feet (LOL). I borrowed a Carol Gilbey video just to compare routines and techniques. I was surprised to see that her method was more of a deep firm massage, using thumb frictions/circles and not the usual thumb/finger walking, hook and back up etc... that I have been taught. Carol's method seemed to be easier on the thumbs and looked more relaxing for the client. I am interested in any comments you may have about this.
Thanks in advance for your replies

I think it depends where you trained and what you were taught. Personally, I did my training with the Inernational Institute of Reflexology (IIR) and was taught to use the original Ingham method - finger / thumb walking and hook in, back up techniques. This works fine for me and for many other reflexologists - I reckon if it ain't broke there's no need to fix it. I'd stick with the way you were taught :)

I was taught by the IFR (International Federation of Reflexologists). Their ways are similar to the IIR but are not so severe. The pressure is lighter and there is very little hooking-in and backing-up - much more relaxing to my mind, having experienced both sorts of treatment. Lots of caterpillar walking though.
As Sulis has said, stick to the way you were taught. Perhaps try adjusting your pressures and see what your clients think of each method.

oooh thats an interesting observation, paul! i do not work heavily as i dont believe its necessary and dont do much hooking and backing. for me, i dont like too much prodding on my sensitive little feet <g>.
i was always told that heavy is working on physical, light is emotions and very light is ethereal...
am i ignorant to have never heard of carol gilbey?

I've never heard of Carol Gilbey either! I know what you mean Paul, having done a couple of mini courses with Renee of IFR I do personally like the lighter pressure more that the heavier stuff. It's horses for courses though.

I'm a firm pressure girl myself and find that people prefer it. I don't go for pain though! I have had such treatments myself and found it impossible to relax. However I do find that people complain about not getting a deep enough pressure so it's very much a case of getting feedback from them, watching their expressions and asking if the pressure is right.
I think a good treatment covers both physical and emotional. We have got a new therapist who gives the most fantastic treatment. I had one from her the other day and felt like she inside my energy if that makes sense! She also uses a nice firm pressure and to be honest she is the best I have experienced.
Sensitive areas usually decrease after a few treatments I find and you can work gently over them in the meantime.
I have adapted my routine as I have gone along and added all sorts in. I do a lot of massage before and after treatment as people seem to really like it and relax deeply. What I don't like is therapists who simply do the routine and nothing more. They don't go back over areas that need working, which I think is important and are too quick to finish. I make it last a good hour and this leaves plenty of time for treatment and massage.
I haven't heard of her either![&:]

Hi all!
I'm not a reflexologist, but I clicked on this forum accidentally - and saw the name "Carol Gilbey".
I'd like to buck the trend and say - I have heard of her! More than that, I have her massage video. And the reason for that is:-
She taught my ITEC massage course!! :) (Ten years ago).
If you just Google her name, it seems she has other videos available too. She's been busy! She was an excellent massage teacher, and came very highly recommended at the time.

Carol Gilbey's video is ITEC accreditated. When I was training my ITEC teacher warned me not to buy it as it wasn't at all useful.........feet too far in the background. I did, however, purchase a copy out of curiosity from ebay at a cost of £2. I did watch it a couple of times and then sold it on.........£18.00 was made (couldn't believe my luck).
I have to say that I am fairly firm with my touch and if I have a treatment I like it 'strong' too. I am the same with massage.............I find that clients like to know that they have experienced one rather than an airy fairy affair.

I have the Carol Gilbey video too and wasn't too impressed with the techniques. Can anyone recommend a good video?

Renee Tanner of the IFR has made a video but, although I've got a copy, I have never ever seen it all the way through at one sitting.
I believe I may have seen it all in little bits because Renee's voice sends me to sleep in about 5 minutes, Soooooooooooooooooooooo if you want a cure for insomnia and a demonstration of Reflexology - this is a must for you:D
