Question:
Hi
I stary my first Tai Chi class tonight, of a ten weak course.
Can anyone let me know what to expect?
Do I need to wear just normal gym wear?
Jo
Some loose fitting cotton clothes or gym clothes will be fine with some low heel soft shoes. Its hard to say what the first class will be, probably an introduction and the first posture of the 24 move form and some stretching.
Well I quite enjoyed it and looking forward to next week.
Hopefully my co-ordination will improve as the weeks go on!!!!
Jo
Jo,
One thing that I've been told that really helps with co-ordination, balance, breathing, timing is PRACTISE PRACTISE PRACTISE! No matter what it was that you learned, however simple and meaningless it may have seemed at the time, practise what you can remember. Oh, and don't make it a chore or a competition - that's not T'ai Chi!

Well I am writing to make a confession!!
I have to admit that I found that Tai Chi was not for me. I did not have the patience with it, and found that I was so busy concentrating on learning the moves that I was not enjoying it and did not find it as relaxing as I anticipated.
It was not for me.
So for all of you that do it, I admire you. I just could not get the hang of it.
Booo hooo!!

:( Aww. Once you learn the moves and your body remembers the sequence, it will be as you want, though! It's like learning to play a tune on the piano... initially it's really slow, sounds nothing like the tune you're learning and you make loads of mistakes (unless you're gifted!), but once you've played the piece enough times you don't even have to think about it or look at the score, and the music just flows out of your fingers!
Was the teacher rushing through the form and not giving you enough time to learn which move is when? If he/she was then let them know. I'm sure they would be willing to slow down. Also there's no need initially to make every position perfect; once you know the entire sequence, you can perfect the positioning of the limbs and the way you're supposed to move.
If you learn just one posture and repeat it over and over, you are doing TC. Teachers sometimes teach it too fast, there is alot of information. TC is not for everyone because of this and this is one of the reasons is not more mainstream in my opinion. You have had a taste maybe take a break from it and try again in the future also you might try Ba kwa, in its basic form can be easier or the 8 silk brocade also possibly a different teacher.
