Question:

I am a newbie, and would like to introduce myself.
I have been reading through the threads for several weeks now and finally decided to become a member as the whole forum is so interesting.
I currently live in Dorset with my husband, I work full time as a civil servant and am looking for a career change.
I am so interested in waxing, that I am thinking of starting up a mobile business.
I have no experience in waxing but have signed up for a 1 day course in March with Capital Hair and Beauty.
I would appreciate any advice anyone could offer on waxing courses, starting a mobile business, insurance needed, and experience needed.
I am looking forward to getting to know you all, as you all seem to be great people and very helpful, with all the experience you all have.

Hi Princess Nina
Welcome to HP. I wish you a lot of luck with your waxing career. However, it's best to make sure that the 1 day course you are going on is insurable. Some insurance companies need a qualification (ie NVQ or VTCT). Don't want to put any dampeners on this but it's best to be safe than sorry.
Love and good luck

Hi Lotusflower
Thanks for the tip, i think the waxing course i have signed up for will not be enough so i have enquired with the Holistic Training Centre, they have a Waxing course that will give me a part NVQ Level 2 in waxing. The course is 5 weeks, 1 day a week, but the trouble is its in Southampton, which is a little to far but I may not have a choice.
I live in Weymouth, Dorset and my local college can not help.
I dont know if anyone knows of a company that is closer to me?
Thanks again

Hi,
that's a shame that there is nothing nearer than Southampton. Have you checked out Dorchester?

Hi Sue
Nothing in Dorchester, I keep searching on the internet but all the Beauty Schools or Courses for waxing are up country. I will keep trying. I have sent another email to my local college hoping they will put something together but still no reply as yet.
I rang an insurance company today and they said they would insure me provided i have sat an exam and passed, they dont need any specific qualification.
I have also spoke to Valley School of Beauty in Hampshire, they provided their own qualification which is recognised by the necessary bodies or an international qualification.
IAs I am setting up my own business they suggested studying for thier own qualification which is a one day course then home study to make up a portfolio of treatments and clients then that is marked, if okay I would need to return to sit an exam.
Im nackered now after all that, I bet you are after hearing me rabble on, sorry.:D
I shall keep looking and see what happens.

and thanks again

Hi building up your client list is very hard work without somesort of advertising budget but with help from a load of friends you can do it. But my advice to you is have more strings to your bow. Waxing alone would not keep you busy. a good treatment to have is massage. Nearly everybody loves a massage! but get as many different treatments under your belt as possible. Only problems is then is having a big enough car for all your gear!
best wishes

Hi , I have just joined the forum and have seen your posting. any luck with finding a waxing class ?
My in-laws live on Portland so have asked if they know anywhere.
I will keep you posted.
I would say though that a one day course/lesson is far from ideal to then go out on your own to give treatments. The recommended qualifying time is usually 50 hours !! That includes practical and theory.
Let me know how you r doin .

Hi all
Just to give you an update.
I did the Capital Hair and Beauty 1 day course.
I found it very good but again like the othewrs have said I felt I needed more practice before going out into the big wide world. So since then I have purchased all the equipment and have started practicing on my family members only.
I have also decided to study waxing with The Cottage Training Centre in Southampton, which when qualified will give me an VTCT NVQ 3 in Waxing (i think its nvq 3 without looking at my papers).
I have to attend 2 half day courses and then an assessment appointment.
I have booked this course for June, so i will let you know how i am doing.
Until them I will keep waxing my family as practice.
I waxed my husbands chest and he had an allergic reaction, he does suffer with spots anyway plus he has never waxed the area before and in the past did shave it once and the same thing happened. ooopppps.
I will keep you informed
Also what do people recommend for skin reactions if clients want to apply creme. I thought of Sudocreme, camomile lotion?
From all the family waxing I have done, its only my husband that has suffered with this, so please dont worry im not hurting people. hehehehehe

Hi PrincessNina
I did the salon systems waxing course at Capital last year and found the tutor to be very good. Professional beauty do cover you when you do this course.
The only way to do it is to get out and practice. Find a local salon, befriend them, tell them what you are hoping to achieve and perhaps they will let you help out there occasionally. Someone more experienced can show you to begin with. This is what I did to start with and found it very useful.
I now rent a room on my own and do quite a lot of waxing. There are different types of waxing courses you can do, for instance hot waxing if you want to do hollywood (all off).
Also get yourself a good waxing book. I have one called A step by step guide, waxing made easy ISBN 1-56253-171-9. It's a good reference.
I am currently thinking of doing a facials course at the cottager training place in Hythe. The holistic centre in Southampton are very good too, I did my Indian Head Massage course there. Are you located in the Hants area?

Hi Deb379
Thanks for your input.
I live in Portland Dorset, near weymouth.
When I booked the course to the Cottage Training Centre, I thought I would just have to get a train then bus, but it turns out I have a 1h 50min train ride, 5-10min bus ride then a 20 min ferry ride just to get there, and I have to do this 3 times to get qualified. But hey I think its worth it.
The Cottage Training Centre looked very good as they only train to a max of four in a group which is why I chose to study there.
Also Kim Sexton the Owner is great, she is very helpful and informative.
Once I have this qualification, I plan to do the new advanced waxing course they now offer.
Trouble is i need more money to pay for these courses. I plan to start offering my services to friend and word of mouth, then once I have a bit more money behind me I can go and do the advanced waxing.
Not only that but my waxing has taken a bit of a back seat due to my husband setting up his business printing t-shirts, which i am helping him with.
So much to do and such little time.
Thanks again for words of wisdom, I will get you informed
