Question:
Dear all,
There was a thread about chakras on the old board which I wanted to join. Someone said that part of a reiki treatment is to balance the chakras, but what does it mean - to balance the chakras? Does it just mean to make them less unbalanced, which is not quite the same thing. It seems to me that to have fully balanced chakras would be like being free from negative karma ie to be almost perfect on all planes - physical, mental, spiritual etc, which of course is incredibly rare. Then let us take someone with a serious illness such as cancer - do we think that after giving reiki to this person that his chakras will be balanced? Surely the disease is a form / manifestation of imbalance, so how can we say that such a person is balanced? Anyway please correct me if I have a wrong understanding of chakras here.

Put your hand on crown and other hand on root, for balancing spiritual and physical life:
One on Throat Chakra and other on Sex Chakra, for balancing low and high creativity:
One on Belly and other on Heart, for balancing low and high emotion,

That is not a chakra balance routine, that is for assisting with some of the things that chakras have an effect on, you balance each chakra independent of each other and then balance them to each other and then energise them, unblocking chakras is different again.
Your sex chakra is the base or root chakra which is also the seat of your emotions or the perineum point is, in reality with Usui Reiki the chakras are not worked it is something that is being imported into Reiki like crystal healing etc to make Reiki more appealing but there are some very good system out there that concentrate on the different issues and it is better to learn them the way they are supposed to be learned rather than get them second or third hand which have usually been adapted to make them work with another system.

Part of healing with Reiki can be just balancing the Chakras. If the energy flow through the body is balanced and unrestricted - all blockages and imbalances removed - the body will work better and heal itself.
The method of balancing the chakras can be done in many ways but the basis is the intent of the healer to balance the chakras which is the most important aspect. The belief and trust of the healer in their intended aim is all that is required. The method - using crystals, hands, chanting, pendulums, etc is immaterial.
If a person has a serious medical condition the balancing of their chakras does not 'cure' them. For example tuning a car engine (into balance) improves it's performance but does not remove any carbon deposits caused by it's being out of tune before being tuned although being tuned might cause some of the carbon deposits to start to be removed by the better performance. So it is with longstanding medical conditions, the body is 'tuned'/balanced, hopefully performance improves and the existing condition is 'attacked' and a 'cure' is induced/commenced.

Do you mean that Usui never talked about chakras, and do you not use chakras yourself in a reiki context? I guess I find chakras helpful if only as something to focus on.

I have been fascinated with chakras ever since reiki 1 and have read up quite a bit about it, as I see it chakras react to blockages within everyday life and balancing the chakra is more attune to opening those which are blocked to a level that is acceptable and workable to the indiviual person.
I have found the easiest way to unblock, balance or open the chakra is by drawing down the source through each chakra, some I find are easy and some I have to really work with but doing this along with meditation I have found is a good way, it takes a while to get used to dealing with chakras but it is a great experiance and well worth it in the end.
As for working with other people, reiki is there as balancing tool and what ever you do will be of benefit, I don't think you can ever do anything wrong with reiki and also balancing of the chakras, the best action is to go with the flow and experiment with whatever feels confortable.

OK but say in the case of cancer I imagine that a tumour is the result of some balance rather than something with an independent existence. So I mean the tumour would be 'feeding' off the imbalance, but once the imbalance was removed, then the tumour would have to wither and die. But you seem to say that once a tumour has established itself then it can become kind of autonomous, as if continuing to exist but without any continuing cause.

Yes I do work with the chakras but I was working with them a long time before I receive my many Reiki attunements, I even added a simple chakra balance routing to my Kundalini Reiki Manual as this was sadly lacking in the one I received but that was nothing to do with Reiki nor was it in any of the many Reiki manuals I have.
There are quite a few of the modern versions of Reiki which are in reality nothing to do with Reiki or should I say that they use completely different frequencies and concepts to the original Reiki so they should be called something else, but Reiki has become popular so it is easier to call something Reiki this or that and people will want it rather than let something stand or fall on its own merits as it should.
I just hope that when they finally get round to regulating Reiki they do not put all energy channelling modulations into the same category because they all work differently and the are used differently.
