Drugs and alcohol
Question:

Hello...
I am writing now with a query which I am aware that I may be over simplifying but I would like some discussion on ~ I feel it may be a fairly contraversial issue (although I could well be wrong) so here goes...
I was taught and my reading around seems to suggest that most people would not think that it is a good idea to do Reiki on someone who has either used alcohol or illegal drugs. I don't really understand why this is. I very much understand that it would not be appropriate to treat someone who is steaming drunk but I don't understand about any drink at all.
To add some context I will say that I work within a substance misuse service and am looking at using this within our drop in centre but the clients that I would be working with are likely to have either opiates or alcohol in their system because at the time I would be working with would be physically dependant and it may not be safe for them to have not drank (not necessarily the same for people who use opiates).
Now I have heard it said that the Reiki would be likely to sober them up quite abruptly but if Reiki is said to work only for the good then I do not see that this would happen because it could be dangerous for that person. Also, many kinds of medication that are presrcibed are fairly toxic and have horrible side effects but it is not said that people on these tablets should not have Reiki but they may well be as toxic as alcohol so why would Reiki detox you of alcohol not but not of these. And what about drugs like diamorphine or benzodiazepines, both of which can be prescribed or ubought illicitly on the black market. What happens here? I don't see that Reiki would distinguish between the two and if you can do it one, why not on the other. What about methadone which is a prescribed opiate. Okay or not?
Again, I need to be really clear that I am not talking about giving it to people who are massively intoxicated, I am talking about the people who have a physical addiction and need to have used whatever the substance is to not withdraw.
I would be really interested to hear what people say about this as to get it all through all of the hoops I need to to get going (within the NHS) I need to get really clear and to have something to 'prove' it is okay to be using. It has also been brought up for me because I say it stated as a contraindication on the guidelines for the National Occupational Standards and this seems worrying to me.
Enough now, what do you think?

Hi Emma
I personally do not see a problem with what you are suggesting as long as the people are happy to receive an energy treatment then it is the same as any other time.
The only thing is people who are high or drunk are often a little unpredictable so I would be more concerned with your own health and wellbeing than theirs ;-)
Giving someone an energy treatment is not the same as giving them a chemical blocker to stop the reaction of the substance to help them to stop doing it, an energy treatment or two should help them to focus a little clearer and then it is up to them and their higher selves to decide what choices they make.

I am with Paul as long as the person is receptive and not abusibe, Reiki energy is used for good reasons and not bad So in the long run such energy will have a good effect on the person u r treating no matter how small the out come in
Keep up the good work

The only thing I would add here is be careful about the energies in play... I gave Reiki to a habitual cocaine user (I found this out afterwards) and picked up the weirdest 'buzz' all the way through the treatment which kind of threw my game off, if you know what I mean! While it didn't affect me afterwards, I didn't feel 100% comfortable either.
I'm not sure if you would have to do extra grounding work beforehand or in between clients, but it might be worth considering.
