Indian Ayurvedic candling - Mail on Sunday
Question:

Hi,
I don't know if anyone saw this article in the magazine section yesterday. I can't type the whole article out, but points that interested me.
1. Facial Massage first ( I do mine after )
2. Use of Moxa candle over the forehead, cheeks and temples ( so nothing in the ear yet )
3. Narrow ended candle (sounds more like a cone), placed in the ear and lit - draws out the wax and evaporates the mucus
4. Suggested DIY hopi ear candles from Holland and Barrett (why not go and see a trained therapist!!!????) - that bit annoyed me.
5. Drink water and avoid mucus producing foods - OK
6. For ear candling - contact centre - charge £100 per 1 hour session - my hubby nearly fell off his chair at that one.
I think I might try the facial massage before and after on my next regular client and see how she feels - I won't introduce a Moxa candle though.

Hi there, princesspink
I was taught by Linda Stokes who states that you shouldn't open up the candle after the treatment - but I do BUT I do believe it's a bit like reading tea leaves at times, so I wouldn't necessarily use it as a reliable guide as to what is happening.
Now then - I recently went to a therapy centre where the receptionist enthusiastically told me that her candling treatment was the best her family had had because the candle had pulled huge lumps of reddish wax out of her ear and deposited it in the candle. I described the brownish/amber lumps that sometimes look like drips and she said yes that was it and the candle had sucked it out of her ear - because the therapist had told her.
Now this is what I believe - the brownish/amber lumps are a product of the candle - I don't doubt that there may be some loose, light debris - skin cells etc contained in them - but think about it - dark brown ear wax is old wax when the nurse or consultant removes it either by vacuuming the ear or by ear irrigation it has usually been softened either by the addition of a softening agent or perhaps by the over production of fluid in the ear by infection. Ear irrigation and vacuuming can be quite forceful. I don't believe an ear candle can exert quite the same amount of force BUT I do believe that it can help loosen or soften wax so that it may be expelled by the ear at sometime - I've had fresh, lighter coloured wax come out of my ear after a treatment.
I believe you have to manage a patients expectations and to be perfectly honest the receptionist scared the living daylights out of me (particularly as she was quite agressive about it). I decided that I didn't want any of my patients going there so I wished them well and left.
Ultimately experience will help you formulate your own opinion, in the meantime keep an open mind and an open heart.
Happy new Year to you to

hi funnybunny, i think on the same lines as you, clients should be told the whole allround benifit of the treatment, on my case studys at the moment, i am explaining that the candle will help soften the earwax and help to come out of its own accord naturally and you are right the more i do the more i can decide for myself, only prob i do have is work in a salon and another therapist there was taught a completly different way so has different views, on the treatment, but as we know this happens all the time in this industry, an we are working on finding a happy medium. thank you for replying have a happy new year:D

i must find this article and read it -
yes i do my facial massage after
i once came across someone selling cone shaped candles she was a distributor for a brand i can't remember the name but i'm only covered for biosun and frankly they looked bizarre and had a foil circle on the end to protect the ear.... i dunno!!
i was taught the ear wax would soften in the ear and fall out of own accord and any 'wax' in the candle was residue from the candle itself and there was no way there would be enough suction to draw ear wax that far!
i'm going to trawl for the article now.

One thing I will add is that I was lucky enough to be someones case study for ear-candling, at the start of it I was just as normal but on the second or third session, I had a bad head cold and when she opened the candle up at the end there was a ridiculous amount of gunk in there, so I don't know.
Anyway there you go!:)[sm=1syellow1.gif]

hi skyrocket,
the gunk would be from the candle
when you head is clearer and not bunged up with a cold the smoke travels around and does not lose so much energy on the way round and back up - so it can burn off the residue
when you head is thick with cold the smoke has to work harder travelling round and therefore loses energy and does not burn off so much residue
sorry - my brain is not being very technical today so i have said things in a very basic way - apologies xx
the guy i did my course with is "ear candling" on this site and he started a thread about residue:[link]http://www.our page.net/forum/tm.asp?m=87161[/link]
try clicking link - i hope it works

Well, I was also taught that it was ear wax left in the candle. But thinking about it afterwards, how would the ear wax travel through the filter in the candle and why would there never be any stuck onto the filter?? My view is that it is melted wax residue from the candle mixed with the burnt honey - hence the 'caramel' smell at the end of the treatment.

Can earwax 'fly'?!!! I don't think so!! Amusing thought though [sm=rollaugh.gif]
Hi Miss Alaska, I also trained with the same guy as you, and so did Foz who hasn't been around for a while.
Earcandling has spent much money on research into the content of the candles after burning. They were found only to have candlewax in them, not earwax. If anyone is interested, he's written a really good book on the subject of Ear Candling, and ear, nose and throat problems. There's some really good stuff in there. I was able to give someone some really useful advice and info on their Tinitus last week.

It would be very easy to do an Ayurvedic version yourself. Just pick the scented biosun candle for the client's dosha and add marma points in with the massage.

Hi,
I have tried to find the article on the net, has anyone had any luck finding it as I can't?
I have been doing hopi ear candling (trained by Linda Stokes) for 2 years with great results. I am also trained in moxa and Tibetan acupressure head massage, so would love to read the article and see if I could do something similar.
thanks in advance
