Question:
hello everyone! i just came across this message board, and i have to say its great! i just moved to edinburgh from calgary, alberta, canada, and its great to find a place where so many like minded people chat. and while i can't wait to get chatting to, i really need some help. can anyone please tell me where to find borax? i've tried some supermarkets, diy and even some natural/organic type stores, and while everyone seems to have heard of it, no one can say where i can find. any ideas? thanks!
Hi there and welcome to HP.
Have you tried your local Chemist/Pharmacy?
Hi
I used to work in Boots The Chemist and we used to sell Borax. You need to go to the Chemist counter as they normally keep it in the drawers behind the counter. hope this helps

I got it in Boots. They don't always have it though, it is very difficult to get![>:]
thanks for the ideas. i will try to ask in Boots at the counter. Does anyone know if 'soda crystals' are the same thing as borax? i've seen packages of this and it says 'phosphate free, ___ free, ___ free, etc'. used for laundry, cleaning, etc. i'm hoping its the same. it was really inexpensive so i picked up a package, hopefully it'll do the trick. thanks all, hope you do mind if i have a few more of these kind of 'where do you find it' questions.
You're best to try in a local chemist, as they usually carry "Unichem" or "standard" medications and items in plain packaging for a very modest price. In England we have shops like LLoyd's Chemists, Moss, Selles etc- just visit the Scottish equivalent and you should find yr Borax + odd stuff like Indian Brandee, Fuller's Earth, strange cough linctuses and oil of cloves.
Happy Hunting!:)
Hi
Although I spent 14 years at Boots The Chemist I must admit to spending VERY little time on the chemist counter. I have to say though NO I don't think they are the same thing. I am going into town tomorrow so will ask at my local boots for you. I did a quick search on both borax and soda crystals and this is what I found....
borax
n. a natural salt, also made from soda, used as flux and antiseptic.
Soda Crystals: One Product - Many Uses
Soda Crystals are alkaline. The main uses of Soda Crystals are to dissolve grease, soften water, loosen dirt and reduce acidity. Soda Crystals, along with soap and Soap Flakes, were virtually the only domestic cleaners at the turn of the twentieth century. They were used for cleaning and laundry and can even be used in cooking. Still available in free-flowing crystal variety, Soda Crystals are now also available as a liquid version - ideal as a surface cleaner, a trigger spray version and for commercial use in an anti-bacterial formula.
As I say I could be wrong but I don't think they are the same thing. I remember our customers buying soda crystals for cleaning but can't for the life of me remember why they bought borax. Will do my undercover investigations tomorrow..lol

Soda crystals, otherwise known as Caustic soda and is also used for clearing blocked drains!
Definitely not for internal use!
