Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Question:

Does anyone out there have some good information/links etc on how to help someone with OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)?
Anything would be useful. I know what it is but and we have both read a book called Brain Lock which was helpful, but I'm looking for things I can give to a friend of mine who seems to be getting worse lately.
Thanks

Thanks Melang.
I know of a few around here so I'll ring them and have a chat. It needs to be someone my friend will connect with.

Have you thought about trying some Bach flower remedies and/or australia bush flower essence? It might help in the short term to address it in the long term.

Hi Neil,
One possibility worth checking out is EFT. This would go well with your own NLP - I've been adding it in the mix for a couple of months now and am very impressed with the results - e.g. helping people with fear of being sick in public, finger chewing, food cravings and so on.
You can find out more from www.emofree.com or www.theamt.com
My only caveat is to be cautious if the person concerned is emotionally or physically frail.
Good luck

Thanks for that. She is pretty emotionally frail, but I will certainly check out the info you put the links on for.
She's just started going to an OCD support group to which uses a bit of behavioural therapy, so we'll see how that goes too.
I keep hearing about EFT but haven't had the chance to really look in to it.
Thanks
Neil

many before me have already suggested different approaches. In one way or the other they all have positive effects. The one thing I personally would pay attention is to understand the REAL needs of your friend and to investigate the REAL cause of this behaviour. You may well know this already but at times this kind of behaviour is a reaction to something else. Therefore trying to "cure" the effect would still leave the "cause" unaltered.
The other thing is to spend time with your friend trying to focus their mind on a positive image of themselves. OCD as you may know often masks dissatstisfaction with one's personality/life results and this can be counteracted by boosting the person's self-esteem, their self confidence and above all changing negative and destroying thought patterns into positive ones.
Just some more arrows to your bow. All the best.

Hi Neil,
Alex (Purpose) is right. Boosting the person's self-esteem is one very good way of helping them combat OCD.
I have used my Louise L Hay philosophy to good efffect with someone having had OCD for a very long time. The results have taken a long time but she is gradually losing her OCD through her own efforts.
The overcoming of OCD has to be the desire of the 'sufferer' and they must be given the opportunity to become more positive and do it themselves without becoming equally obsessive or compulsive about it. Gentle humour can help this.
I wish you every success and happiness in helping your friend overcome their OCD.

Hi,
in response to Dez, I haven't yet had any problems with using EFT on anyone. My caution was just for anyone looking in who might be tempted to use EFT who didn't have the experience to deal with big emotions - EFT can sometimes unlock or bring to the surface some pretty heavy duty "stuff" which needs careful handling.
Check out Sylvia Hatmann's books for more information - "Adventures in EFT" and "The Advanced Patterns of EFT" are both excellent.
All the best

hello. I am not so sure that I agree with whoever said getting over OCD is a matter of "desire" hence the word "compulsive"
er...I suppose suggesting hooking up with a psychiatrist and considering possible medication would be out of the question? lol
Not that I think meds should be an auto answer...but maybe finding someone who specializes on OCD might be able to help you figure out different "behavioral modification" strategies as well. Couldn't hurt. Reading books is great in educating yourself about a disorder, but in the end, it can usually only speak to generalities or most often's. An actual expert in the area may be able to see something that doesn't fit the "norm" if that makes sense
edited to say: like depression and other mental disorders, sometimes OCD can be a purely "medical" problem--as in neuro malfunction. It doesn't necessarily have to be attached to trauma or some other "deep-rooted" problem. In my opinion at least.
edited again to say: I'm sensing a trend in my posts in this topic area (mind therapies). I'm thinking everyone gets my perspective and I'll just mosey on over to other threads...lol

And you are entitled to your opinion as that's the angle that most people (and the medical profession) believe in.
Therapies like EFT tend to come from a different angle however. It's believed that the physical problems (or "medical" problems as you put them) are caused as an effect of a disturbance in the body's energy system. The disturbance of the energy system is linked to emotional issues, whether consciously or unconsciously apparent. By using EFT we target the underlying emotional issues, "tapping" the energy system back into order which causes the physical effects caused by these to dissappear.
It's a whole new way of thinking and can take a while to get your head around, but most definitely should not be dismissed as some sort of nonsense. The proof is in the pudding as they say. You have to experience it to really see how it works.
