Just want to pick your brains, hopefully you guys will be able to help me out.

Many people buy EPO supplements for PMS symptoms, especially for breast tenderness, however, it is also excellent for a dry skin. When you buy evening primrose capsules, you are actually buying GLA - gamma linolenic acid, this is the active anti-inflammatory substance found in EPO supplements. Prices vary enormously and you need to be aware exactly what you are buying. EPO (and starflower oil which contains slightly more GLA) is usually sold as either 1,000mg or 500mg. However, not all of this is gamma linolenic acid, as GLA comes as a percentage of the total supplement. You need to read the small print which states what percentage of GLA is contained in the supplement. This may range anywhere from 5% to 25%. For example, you may purchase a 1,000mg EPO supplement for £5 containing 5% GLA giving you 50mg of GLA. Alternatively you may purhcase a 500mg of EPO, also for £5, containing 20% GLA however, this supplement would give you 100mg of GLA (the active ingredient) for the same price! making it very cost effective!
For dry skin 50mg of GLA daily would be sufficient. Don't forget that vitamins A & C and the mineral zinc are also excellent for all skin conditions.
Hi Suzanne,
I think you maybe slighty wrong, GLA is part of the omega 6 chain of ecosanoids, and to the best of my knowledge it is pro-imflamatory and it is omega 3 that is anti inflamatory,
thats why alot of people who have diets high in omega 6 ( thats nearly all of us unless you take particular care in this department) have aching joints, because the balance of omega 6 to omega 3 is out, when this happens the body produces a chemical that stores in our joints and causes pain. If you dont eat enough fish or take flax seed you should supplement with an omega 3 source.
best wishes Dave
