How do you protect yourself?
Question:

Having only set up my business a couple of months ago I have been so busy getting treatment room set up, lsorting iterature, making client at ease etc. that I have not been thinking about protecting myself during treatments. At college we were told about imagining yourself in a white bubble, I have been trying to do this on treatments this morning but not quite getting it [&:]
Would be interested to hear what you do/any recommendations
Thanks
Natasha :)

Yes you can do the bubble thing. Personally I haven't really had to do it. Only once felt awful after giving a massage. Treat lots of people and don't seem to find it a problem.;)

I've never had to protect myself, Natasha, and neither has my wife who also practises Reflexology.
I believe it's a matter of your belief and intent. If YOU believe you need to protect yourself then you will find that you have to, If you don't, then you will not need to protect yourself because you will draw clients to your practise that you do not need to protect yourself from.
So it really IS up to you.
Have a lovely and secure practise.
Edited to add the bit about my wife just in case you came back at me saying that I didn't require protection as much as you because I'm a chap:D

Hiya
I found i was more vunerable to peoples energies when I was pregnant....
other than that if I am well rested and in good health I dont normally protect however if i am a little tired or under par I do, for both the client and myself.

Interesting. I found at college I never really needed too, or never felt the need to but recently I have been treating several people with very bad headaches and tiredness... thiers has gone but I am suffering with both now. It has actually got worse this last week and I have never been one to suffer with headaches. Maybe coincidence. Need some reflexology myself! :)

[sm=wave.gif] Hi! Was really interested to read the postings on protecting yourself during treatments. I am a reflexologist and I also give Indian Head massage. I do voluntary work in a local hospital, for a cancer charity, in the breast cancer ward. The other week I was just starting to relax a pre-op lady, before starting IHM. I had my hands on her shoulders and we were breathing together, then I noticed a black floating wisp of 'something', not unlike a piece of burnt paper floating off a fire. It floated from her breast area over her shoulder then over my shoulder. I acknowledged it, but just carried on with the treatment. It was only whilst travelling home that I thought 'what was that!'
It wasnt a fly, even now I am doubting that I ever saw it, but I did!
when I got home that nite I was tired to my bones and even the next day, I was so tired and slept for most of the day.
Does anyone out there have any clues as to what it might have been?[sm=scratchchin.gif] I do see Aura's whilst treating clients at home but I've never experienced anything like this before!
Thanks in anticipation [sm=1kis.gif]

I wonder often if its due to some people being particularly 'open' healing channels. I did a reiki course and found myself sapped particularly when treating people with M.S.
This also happened the first time I treated a client, who did spiritual healing( also had M.S..
I also sought advice on here and haven't had the problem since. I was giving my energy rather than being a channel.
Good luck with your practice and enjoy it all. You will probably be perfectly ok, especially as you are aware of the need to not give all your own energy now.

I don't usually protect myself either, except in one case where the lady in question is a nightmare.......so negative. I find myself dreading treating her and seriously thinking of giving her up.
I would worry about this incident though and have some healing as it sounds as though something may have attached itself to you, especially since you were very tired. I had one a few years back and had to have it removed.

Hi
If you work with clients then it is really, really important to protect yourself, not in a defensive or negative way, but in a way that stops you picking up on their emotions and energy, allowing you to do a better job, and not get drained.
I didn't believe in the wisdom of this for a long time, but as I practised more, I realised that I was picking up on the moods and feelings of clients, and these would stay with me for some time afterwards, making me very depressed and miserable, even ill at times. It does depend on how sensitive you happen to be, and I am ultra sensitive, admittedly.
Since most people who seek treatment are stressed out or in need of help, their energy is often pretty down, and as a sensitive/empathetic therapist, if you do not have any protection in place, you will act like a sponge and soak up all their stuff, whether you are aware of it or not.
It really is important! (Can you tell I'm passionate about this??!)
The actual method varies from person to person, but white bubbles, zip-up bodysuits, mirrors etc all work. You could also try experimenting with different colours. My ITEC tutor stressed the importance of this, and I kept forgetting to do it when I was studying, but now it is second nature to me.
Anyway, happy experimenting, and each to his own!!

Hi Lois, maybe that is it, I am a very sensitive person and have always picked up moods/atmospheres and so on without even knowing people.
Elysian, that does sound like an odd experience, are you going to have reiki or something? I was assaulted by a girl in college not so long ago and I had reiki, it really seemed to help me, the woman said she could feel from my arm that it was jealousy there from the girl that did it... sounds odd but i felt loads better after it. The little icon of you hiding behind the sofa is very funny though and still making me chuckle :D
I went into a crystal shop the other day and asked about this and they recommended an amethyst to absorb negative energies in my treatmetn room (I brought a beautiful open amethyst for £5 about the size of my fist) and another black stone which I can't remember the name of but it is a protector. I keep it in my pocket when I work but I am going to have it made into a pendant. It makes me feel better. I am also more concious and think and visualise of a distance between myself and a client sometimes, particularly those suffering with headaches or depression.

I never protect myself during Reflex treatments and in fact if I do 'pick up' on my clients illnesses and moods then I find it a useful tool to understand and help my client. I see it as another form of 'body language' that can help me empathise with them. It's worth while to remember that if you block out all the 'bad vibes' then you can cut of gaining information through the treatment.
I'm sure that many Reflexologist will understand that feeling you get just the moment before you treat a reflex, when you just know that there is an imbalance there even before you touch it!!
If I do get any after effects from treating someone then I just acknowledge it and ask my guides to take it away, not that this happens very often.

Strange you should say that! I have thought about training in reiki!
A friends boyfriend is a healer and he said that the black floating 'thing' may be negative energy. I remember the client saying that her headache and neck pain had lifted after the massage and that she felt she could sleep without medication (good because she was to undergo a mastectomy the next day)
So, I dont know! I dont feel as if anything has attached itself to me
Is the stone that you have 'apache's tear'?
I carry smoky quartz in my tunic pocket whilst treating clients as its supposed to be a good grounding stone and be good for negativity
Dont get me started on crystals! My treatment room is full of them! I love them!
