Question:
i heard today there is a government health directive to GP's that they should actually be recommending complementary therapies to patients... anyone else heard/ read this? it was apparently in the times a few weeks back.
also, an article in the daily mail today about personal fitness trainers being emplyed by the NHS for patients. i tried to find an online link but couldnt. it did say they would be NHS trained trainers...
Don't know about that Rosie, but I can tell you that they are supposed to suggest osteopathy for certain back conditions and guess what? Not many do.[:@]
I thought the personal trainer thing was hilarious! Still at least they are recognising that prevention might actually be better than cure!:D
When I damaged my back in the car accident, my GP suggested either oestopathy or chiropractic as being the best solution - which at the time I was suprised at.
The insurance medical examiner this week that assessed me seemed to think that physiotherapy on the NHS would have been appropriate (probably because I wouldn't be claiming for that!)
Hello Rosie
Re the personal trainers: I saw something about this on the TV yesterday. It wasn't just about pumping iron in the gym, but for stopping smoking, all sorts of help apparently. Also mention of a paper due out this week.
This is what I just put into Google: "Personal trainers on NHS new paper". As there is a list some 133,000 long, I'll let you select the most relevant! :D

Think you've hit the nail on the head there FB, but also worth bearing in mind that there are still a lot of doctors out there that are still anti.
Their the ones that tend to cry - Evidence Based Medicine!
This expression coincidentally around the time that there seemed to be a move toward complementary health care. In short they are saying that any healthcare approaches should be based on good evidence, by their standards, which usually involves trying to treat symptoms. Hmmm!
The real irony is that there were studies carried out in the US in the late '90's looking into just how much of orthodox medicine was based on research. It included, drugs, surgery, care protocols, the whole gammut.
The outcome - about 15% was based on research and not all of that was good! [:o]
Shocked? Well you should be, as they seemed to dictate the public perception and assume tell folks what works and what doesn't.
My point? - Well it's probably going to take a long time, but we're now getting help in the form of the Prince of Wales and the Labour Party seemed to have taken the idea on boared as being a vote winner to give people what they want and push these. [sm=dance.gif]
Regarding insurance companies and solicitors, then they usually have an 'arrangement' with certain consultants, but that's another soap box, for another day. [sm=soapbox.gif]
Here's a website dedicated to the anti-complementary health campaign, you'll be sure to find your own prefered therapy slagged off there. Interesting to see how biased & subjective those can be, that claim to be 'scientific'.

And other side, the pro complementary health lobby - http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/index.htm
Exciting stuff - check out what that one has to say about the QuachWatch crew. :D
Bye for now - Andrew.

i also came across this article when searching for the health directive one.
i have to say, all this talk of NOS on the reiki forum got me wondering about reflexology for example. so i found a site http://www.parliament.the-stationery.../123/12301.htm, but now i cant find the specific section on regulations on reflexology, or proposed ones... or maybe it was something else i was reading regarding how GP's know which therpists to recommend. bugger! i have to go out now too!!!
sorry!
The head GP at our practice is pretty good, but the other GP's are more sceptical about alternative/complementary therapy.
I'm waiting to see what my Dad's (old smokey) - GP has to say when my Dad tells him he's been having ear candling treatments - they work for my Dad & he & I are now of the same opinion - there are more things in heaven and earth that we can possibly know about & if it works, don't knock it!!
