Hi!
The following is a list of oils that are not compatable with homoeopathy as they may antidote the treatment.
CONTRA-INDICATED ESSENTIAL OILS
It is important to avoid the following essential oils whilst undergoing homoeopathic treatment.
Black pepper
Blue Gum Eucalyptus
Borneol (camphor)
Calamintha
Camphor (camphor, menthol)
Chamomile
Cornmint (menthol)
Common oregano (thymol)
Cubeb (black pepper)
Exotic Basil (camphor)
Juniper (camphor)
Mimosa (phenol)
Pennyroyal (camphor)
Peppermint (eucalyptus)
Peppermint (menthol)
Rosemary (camphor)
Sassafras (camphor)
Spanish sage (camphor)
Spearmint (menthol)
Spike Lavender (camphor)
Tansy (camphor)
Thuja (camphor)
Turpentine
Yarrow (camphor)
This is not an exhaustive list - if having aromatherapy, please check with your therapist.
Hope this helps.
What is the timescale between using homeopathy and one of the above essential oils?
I have heard differing advice, for example to people taking homeopathic medecine, not to use peppermint or drink coffee at all, or some say just 15 minutes to half an hour afterwards. Would the same apply with essential oils?

Hi Aromababe,
It's a question that has lots confused! There is basic instruction to take remedies in a clean mouth & so the advice is to avoid food, drink or smoking for 20 mins either side of the remedy. This is to allow the remedy the best chance of being cleanly absorbed. The other issues are to do with antidoting the remedies. Although homoeopathic remedies are very powerful, they can also be very "fragile" & many things can destroy the good positive effects. Most of these things have a strong smell - mint, coffee, things found in cold treatments (eucalyptus, menthol etc) tea-tree oil. Therefore if a patient is actively undergoing homoeopathic treatment, they are best to avoid these things until their condition is cured or their treatment is complete. Remedies can last for years in the body, so these antidoting factors are best avoided. I can post a complete list of these if it would be helpful?
Hope this helps.
Kindest regards
Oooh, could you please, Bellis.
Many thanks.

My pleasure! Here's the list - copied from my advice sheets to patients:
ADVICE ON TAKING HOMOEOPATHIC REMEDIES
Some substances and treatments can undermine and antidote the curative processes set in motion by the homoeopathic remedy, and can even completely undo all the good work being done.
Please, therefore AVOID:
COFFEE However, tea, herbal teas, hot chocolate etc. are all fine in moderation.
MINT Found in toothpastes, essential oils and sweets. Herbal alternatives to mint toothpaste (eg. fennel flavour) can be obtained from health food shops.
CAMPHOR / MENTHOL / EUCALYPTUS / TEA TREE OILFound in Tiger Balm, Essential Oils, Vicks, Deep Heat ointment, cough mixtures and lozenges, shampoos & "Nit" lotions.
OTHER THERAPIES Some therapies (eg. acupuncture, aromatherapy, reflexology, herbalism) work on the energy system in a different way to homoeopathy. It is therefore advisable to not undertake another therapy at the same time. Osteopathy and chiropractic are fine.
ORTHODOX MEDICINE Over-the-counter drugs, ointments and creams unless discussed with homoeopath first.
NON-PRESCRIBED HOMOEOPATHY The healing process underway from one homoeopathic remedy can be adversely affected if another remedy (or remedies) are taken randomly. Please, therefore, do not take another homoeopathic remedy without consulting the homoeopath first.
VITAMINS / MINERALS When taken over an extended period of time, may mask, or give rise to symptoms.
ANTI-PERSPIRANTS Anti-perspirants block the body's natural need to discharge. Crystal deodorants from health food outlets are an effective and non-suppressive alternative.
RECREATIONAL DRUGS Cannabis, marijuana, cocaine, Ecstasy, hallucinogenics and other strong drugs all antidote the positive effects of the remedy.
Homoeopathic remedies are sensitive and can be antidoted. Please ensure that they are stored in a cool, dark place, away from strong smelling substances.
Hope this is of some use & clears up what is OK with homoeopathic treatment.
Best wishes
