Help with Weight Gain & no Loss!!!
Question:

Hi,
I suppose it is difficult to come to terms that i'm not quite a size 16 anymore or whatever I was back in the day. Up to about the age of 21 I was always slimmish, healthyish etc then I travelled abroad to Europe and Middle East.
From 22 onwards I started putting on weight, I know this is lack of exercise and drinking way too much beer and not doing anything to burn it off.
I am now 34 and 23stones!!!! :(and feel pathetic, useless and my old injuries are coming back to haunt me. I've tried every conceivable diet ever created - Weight Watchers (Granted that I lost some weight), Slimfast, Atkins, GI etc.
Problem is I can't go without a day not going into a shop and buying something to either eat or drink and it usually involves crisps or a chocolate. Sometimes I buy the big bags just coz it's there, I don't necessarily enjoy it it's just there and get some sort of pleasure out of spending money.
It's becoming such a problem now that I lie to my wife about what I eat during the day, I feel like i'm living a lie. I refuse to look in the mirror coz I get depressed, even now typing I feel stupid and useless. [&o]
If I shut my eyes I see myself thin and worth something to myself and more importantly my wife. I open them and then I shut myself down and shrug. Even while typing I sit here at my desk with RSI on my wrist, messed Achilles and a big bag of Crisps and silly chocolate things. Why? I don't know why all I know is that I need to make some sort of change physically and mentally but have no idea how, it's not like i've never tried, I have only I fail miserably everytime. I wear clothes that hide the fat and it gets to a point where I don't want to go out coz i *feel* people staring at me and saying things.
I do hope that someone will be able to help or I see myself dead before 50![:@]

hi trev
I wonder if you would consider EFT as this sytem helps address/remove emotional factors underlying over-eating
There is a forum dedicated to it here on HP.

Hi Trev,
It's interesting that you say "If I shut my eyes I see myself thin and worth something to myself and more importantly my wife." - this suggests that diet and exercise are only part of the answer.
If EFT isn't up your street, another avenue that you might want to explore is hypnotherapy.

A good hypnotherapist will work with you to helpunderstand your attitude to food and exercise, to find other ways in which those emotional needs can be met without turning to the biscuit barrel or overeating or whatever your issue is, and then to use hypnosis to encourage the unconscious mind to develop new attitudes to food and exercise.People with weight issues often know what they should and shouldn't be eating, they know that they should be exercising regularly, in essence they know what they need to do to lose weight. So if we want to lose weight then we just have to do what we already know, right? And if it were that simple we'd all be at optimum weight, enjoying "healthy" food, not giving "unhealthy" food a second thought, and exercising because we love it and can't imagine not exercising!
Our attitudes to food and exercise are laid down throughout our lives, forming patterns in our unconscious (often referred to subconscious) mind. When I was a child, if I was upset my mother would give me a biscuit or chocolate to make me feel better, if there was something to celebrate she'd buy cream cakes. We learn to associate certain foods with certain moods, maybe we see food as a reward or a consolation, and so comfort eating begins (ever heard of someone getting upset and reaching for an apple to make them feel better?).Or we start eating a packet of biscuits or crisps and before we know it we've reached the end of the packet and we can barely remember eating them. So whilst our conscious, rational minds know what we should be doing, our unconscious mind sabotages us.Hope this is of help.Best wishes,Amber

Tigress,
I hate to correct you, but there isn't a forum dedicated to EFT - there is a mind-therapies forum which just happens to be used predominantly by EFT'ers. Us other mind-therapists seem to be in a bit of minority!:(

Surprisingly, more people fear success than fear failure. They just don'tsee themselves as being worth the blessings and lifestyle that a part ofthem wants.Look in the mirror and say, "I deserve it!I love success and successloves me!" "I LOVE myself" Really do this today and see whether it makes you uncomfortable.Iconfess that I was uncomfortable the first few times I tried it.Keep itup - you must have someone to convince!
