Owl medicine
Question:

Hello,
My name is Jeff, and for the past 8 years i have been studying the teachings of SunBear and the medicine wheel, and i was sure this was my path, But a few years ago I started to have a desire to study Owl medicine only problem the few native american friends i have say its BAD medicine but i just cant seem to give it up everywhere i go i see Owls.
pictures ,statues, carvings ,etc. I even have a live one who lives out back in the woods and i often hear her talking at night only problem is i dont understand what she's saying also i have had an urge to help the Dreamwalkers"Earthbound spirits" and i know the two are related.
Hopi prophicey says during this time we are living in that us white people will realize the error of our ways and we will turn to our red brothers and sisters for guidance.
Thus the heart of my question: Who Who Who do i turn to for my teachings? i have asked Spirit to help me and that is how i came to be at this website.
now what???

Hello Night Owl
yesterday I bought a new throw which I intend to use as a bedsheet.
It has a depiction of (Asian) Indian deities on it...so you can imagine my surprise when I threw it over my futon to see how it looked and I saw an OWL there, large as life.
It was very beautiful. Like you, my first association was 'bad luck' and then I wondered if it was telling me of an imminent death.....but I have decided that there is an element of superstition on my part in the knee jerk reaction I had in response to the wonderful gift.....
I do not necessarily have to take on the beliefs of another culture to enjoy this soul food.
I have some animal essences from Daniel Malpern, and Owl is one of them.
He prepares these essences with the help of the anmals concerned and the owl is about
wisdom
knowing the truth
seeing clearly through the dark
looking things in the eye
focus
clarity of mind.
maybe you could journey with owl to discover his/her message for yourself

Hello NightOwl
Oh please don't tell me that Owls are bad medicine or bad anything...I love Owls and have wooden owls and pictures all over the house...and I am totally transfixed by the splendour of these birds whenever I see one.
Ok the following I have taken from one of my books
...White Eage Medicine Wheel (apologies to the author as this will probably get typed word for word)[&:]
Many tribes fear Owl & its medicine, believing it to bring warnings of death & disaster, its hoot the sound of doom.
Owl medicine people may be attracted to the use of power for selfish purposes, & need to guard against this. However, the traditional teaching is that Owl brings wisdom. It was wise Owl that perched on the shoulder of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, & whispered in her ear. Owl is able to see dark & hidden things where others cannot, & penetrate deception.
Owl is the messenger of the night realms & deep visions. If afraid of the dark call on Owl medicine & look up at the quiet sky on a brilliant startlit night ...some say that all human beings came from the star nations.
Use Owl medicine to bring your fears & shadow side out into the light. ..(White Eagle)
Hope the above is of some help for you...towards the light
Welcome to HP
luv & peace

Hi jeff, see you had some imformation, thanks tigress, storm.
In many cultures Owl is a symbole of wisdom, and their only bad medicine if you use their energy to do wrong. They are truly a wonderful bird.
To undersand the concept of medicine in the Native American way, one must redefine"medicine".Anything that improves one's connection to the Great Mystery and to all life. The healing of mind body and spirit. This medicine is also anything which brings personal power, strength, and understanding. Our fellow creatures, the animals, echibit habit patterns that will relay these messages healing to anyone astute enough to observe their lesson on how to live. The precious gifts of true medicine are free. When you call upon the power of an animal, you are asking to be drawn into complete harmony with the strenght of that creature's essence.
Gaining understanding from these brothers and sisters of the animal kingdom is a healing process, and must be approached with humility and intuitiveness. The silence of the quiet mind is the sacred fertility of the receiving spirit. The species( animal bird insect etc) become your teacher, with whom you allow yourself to grow and learn. Nothing can replace the observation of these creature in their natural habitats, for this connects you with the Earth, the animal, and the Great Mystery.
Taken from Medicine cards by Jamie Sams & David Carson.
YES my friend the jorney is for you to travel yourself. But guidence is alwayes around if you need it.

Native Aboriginal teachings attribute Owl with protection, wisdom, dreamwork and as a bringer of warning to enable you to make the right decision or safe choice.
When i see Owl in a reading, I usually see this as an indication of protection and an increase in awareness of the constant presence of a guide or helper.
My 5 year old son who I believe to be an old shaman really :) has an owl ornament by his bed to help protect him while he is asleep. He says the owl stays awake at night to look after him so he can sleep happily and peacefully :)
