Question:
Hi!
Am in a bit of confusion, was wondering if anyone knew the difference between sports massage and sports injury, and what the work options are after each.
Which one is better recomended
Thanks
Sports massage is a deep tissue massage.
Sports injuries is learning the treatment and management of sports injuries.
You can go on to physiotherapy and become part of the behind the scenes people who help maintain the stars of sports, or a local therapist. This is a very expensive course and can last a number of years, you could have to join a local youth football team to gain your experience as the governing body will expect you to get as much experience as you can and they like to know you are serious!
Just butting in here, but is this also the same as remedial massage?
Lesley
Hi Lesley!
To be honest, I don't know. I'm only going by what my friend has gone on to do after we passed our A,P & M. She joined the Sports Injuries basic class then went on to Sports Injuries Intermediate. She's now training with the F.A and the reason they charge so much is to put you off going outside the football scene afterwards. She has had to join a local youth team and go with them to every match; home and away. The F.A see this as a real commitment to wanting to be a physiotherapist and hope that by training with them and spending that kind of money you won't want to go elsewhere!! She's finding it really enjoyable but hard work, expensive and a long course.
much love

Hi, regular sports massage helps an athlete/sportsperson to be more flexible, keeps muscle toned and improves the chances of injury avoidance due to pulled muscles etc. Remedial massage is more deep tissue, and can involve a lot of soft tissue work, its aims are to relieve muscular problems/injuries.
Sports Therapy brings together sport/remedial massage, electrotherapy (ultrasound etc), and exercise therapy, sports nutrition and psychology to give the client a more complete treatment, wether it be injury avoidance, treatment or rehabilitation.
There are a large number of courses that may involve parts of the above, which are still classed as sports therapy, but there is a complete training course in west yorkshire, which has students from all over the world due to its well respected syllabus. They are called active health group and are listed on most search engines.
[color=#00CC33]Hello,
The buzz word "SPORTS" has become fashionable in the past decade, with Physios leading the way. It sounds as if one might be either an athlete, or capable of treating an athlete!
Quite frankly, if you have torn a muscle, or similar, it really does not matter much whether you did it kicking a football, wielding a vacuum cleaner, or or running away from your boy/girl friend's spouse./color]
Hi RG,
yes, I do agree, SPORT has become a buzzword, but then it is a fact, that a huge part of the population is now hooked on sport and fitness, which is a good thing, in terms of health. A good sports therapist will be able to treat common injuries, whether or not they occur whilst participating in sport.
