moral questions about crystals
Question:

as my love for crystals has grown, questions about "should we...should I" have popped up in my mind.
It might sound like sheer silliness or paranoia, but:
-are we meant to have crystals? I mean, they all come from deep inside the earth, where man would not have reached if it wasn't for industrial mining, would he?
- how do we know about the possible negative effects? We all embrace how wonderfully healing they are...but what if they were powerful stuff, and not here to serve mankind? what if the gently numbness of holding smoky quartz wasn't actually gently harmful radioactivity...not helping me to get rid of electro magnetic pollution but instead adding to it?
- in short: is it a 2 way love? We love them and "use" them for our many needs, but has Earth agreed to help us by lending us parts of her inside?
I don't know if anyone folllows me...sorry for sounding pathetic, but I had the same conceptual-spritual dilemna when I thought about doing some archaeological digging in the pastbut could not accept the idea of digging up people who had done all they could do to remain buried (Egyptians, etc) just to label them and box or worse, display them in a museum in the name of "science".

Oh my what a thought provoking question Fadette, I saw this post last night and have been thinking about it ever since, so have 40+ others by the looks of it ;)
Even so I don't think I have come up with any answers, I agree they all come from deep inside the earth, where man would not have reached if it wasn't for industrial mining, but not all crystals are mined are they...some do raise to the top of Mother Earth for us to find, but yes for commercial purposes many thousands are mined, then subjected to 'polishing' cutting etc;
- how do we know about the possible negative effects?
Hmmm, good question, but I personally believe that crystals can only work for the higher good of man, and that if negativity was 'put' upon them ~ they themselves would readdress the negativity turning into positive energies.
- in short: is it a 2 way love? We love them and "use" them for our many needs, but has Earth agreed to help us by lending us parts of her inside?
I believe so, Mother Earth gives us many things in nature to use and to nurture, and the 'calling' energies from crystals are just amazing as I'm sure you already know. My thought is that if crystals didn't want to work with us ~ then they wouldn't call to our energies to connect with them.
Maybe I'm doing too much thinking;)

Not at all, its nice to see that someone else cares about crystal ecology!.
Sorry, Don't agree with that statement, many crystals are uncovered by wind and storm and natural erosion, others a actually found in great abundance on the surface. Quartzes and Obsidians and many many jaspers and well too many to mention really? Think of a pebbly beach? Or a volcanic bed?
The oldest referenced uses of crystals were in ancient papyrus and the Egyptians certainly didn't use explosives and blast mining? But take ssome of the 'newer' finds, like for instance Nuumite? that definately is one stone that shouldn't be uncovered and brought to the surface. Its energy is definately iffy to say the least, and far too dark and negative.
Most Smoky is irradiated now :( so I tend to stick to natural pieces. Ahhh yes! Nice to see another that appreciates Tut being back in Tutland :)

well thanks for those replies.
I must say I jumped at this:
Most Smoky is irradiated now :( so I tend to stick to natural pieces.
oh NOOO! that could explain why I feel some numbness in my hands when I hold smoky quartz pebbles...and that sensation does not happen with any other crystal! [:o]
I had read in books that very dark smoky quartz (those almost black)is irradiated, but I did not know that most smoky quartz were too!
I am very interested about the beliefs surrounding/ the uses of crystals in the Ancient world and folklore, so I am grateful for the anectode of the egyptian papyrus.
would anyone recommend me a book on that subject: crystals- ancient uses, beliefs, etc?
Now, back to the ethical choices.
I was wondering about clear quartz (and the other quartz such as amethysts): is it sure that clear quartz reaches the surface? I thought they were "internal" crystals, because when crystals move up, they are transformed (and are called metamorphic), and don't look like the nice crystals (geometrical appearance) anymore.
So, to sum up: which crystals are found on the surface?
- volcanic (basalt, obsidian)
-metamorphic (jasper, rhodonite, marble...)
So all the "pretty" and precious ones are mined, basically (emerald, saphire, beryl...)?

Hi Fadette, think you've raised a really interesting question there ... but far too philosophical for my mind to cope with! :DI don't think I know enough yet about where they come from to be able to offer an answer.
It's interesting reading about this irradiated crystal - I'd not been aware of that [:-]Does that mean it could have damaging effects on us, or simply that it doesn't have the benefit that it should have?

Lots of crystals are 'enhanced' or 'improved' by man to make them more what people expect. So for instance Smoky when irradiated is darker, but its safe to handle , don't worry! Citrine is sometimes heat treated Amethyst, Turquoise may be dyed Howlite or Magnesite, there are many out there. But it doens't necessarily change the energy or make it bad, after all the Earth is full of radiation and heat and is changing and forming crystals all the time, so man is just mimicking the great leader? Have a look at and then look at gem by gem :)
Egypt.... I would suggest you try and research The Ebers Papyrus or The Edwin Smith Papyrus, they both mention crystals, or if you are interested in Ancient Egypt and their healing medicine try John F Nunn's Ancient Egyptian Medicine.
I have seen many clear quartzes in caves that arew easily accessible without mining or intrusion. A resourceful healer will know where to go to access such things. Many Celtic, and NA shamamn and medicine people would instinctively know where to go and look due to the energy given off, the ley lines of energy sources and ancient trails.
But..
I'm detracting from your very good moral point!
Ask and find out how, where and why your crystals came to you.
